Ettelbruck
Ettelbruck ( , ) is a Communes of Luxembourg, commune with list of towns in Luxembourg, town status in central Luxembourg, with a population of inhabitants. History Until 1850, both Erpeldange and Schieren were part of the Ettelbruck commune as well, but both towns were detached from Ettelbruck by law on 1 July 1850. Nazi Germany occupied Ettelbruck on 10 May 1940. The town was first liberated by US forces on 11 September 1944, however it was recaptured by Germany on 16 December during the Battle of the Bulge. Ettelbruck was finally liberated nine days later on Christmas, Christmas Day, 25 December 1944 by US troops, led by General George S. Patton. One of Ettelbruck's main squares is named ''Patton Square'', and is located at the spot where the German offensive into Luxembourg's Alzette Valley was stopped, ending its attempt to reoccupy the country as a whole. Ettelbruck Railway Station
Ettelbruck railway station (, , ) is a railway station serving Ettelbruck, in central Luxembourg. It is operated by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, the state-owned railway company. The station is situated on Line 10, which connects Luxembourg City to the centre and north of the country. Ettelbruck is a junction, with the main line heading further northwards, towards Gouvy and Wiltz, and a branch line connecting to Diekirch. The original station was completed in 1862. In 2014, the Chamber of Deputies voted in favour of modernizing the station, including replacing the original station building, at a cost of €156.5 million. The old station was demolished in 2022, and as of February 2025, the project is due to be completed in 2027. As of 2022, it was the fourth-busiest station in Luxembourg, with over 1.7 million passengers that year. List Of Towns In Luxembourg
There are twelve towns in Luxembourg, as defined by statute. Despite the status as towns, they are not all contiguous urban area, urbanised areas. They are similar to Communes of Luxembourg, communes, but have been given a separate legal status. There is a technical difference between the status of commune and towns, but this is limited in practicality. One difference is that ''Échevin (Luxembourg), échevins'' in towns are formally appointed by the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Grand Duke, whereas ''échevins'' for other communes are appointed by the Minister for the Interior of Luxembourg, Minister for the Interior. CFL Line 10
Line 10 is a Luxembourgish railway line connecting Luxembourg City to the centre and north of the country, as well as on to Liège, in Belgium. The terminus at the southern end is Luxembourg railway station, whilst the terminals at the northern end are Diekirch, Wiltz, Troisvierges and Liège. It is designated and predominantly operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL). History On 21 July 1862, the Chemins de fer de l'Est opened the line section from Luxembourg railway station to Ettelbruck railway station to commercial traffic. On 15 December 1866, the line was extended to Troisvierges railway station before reaching the Belgian border and Gouvy railway station on 20 February 1867. Alzette
The Alzette (; ; ) is a river with a length of in France and Luxembourg. It is a right tributary of the Sauer (a tributary to the Moselle), and ultimately to the Rhine. Schieren
Schieren () is a commune and town in central Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Diekirch. Schieren is served by a railway station, and the commune encompasses the hamlet of Birtrange, which contains Birtrange castle. Schieren was formed on 1 July 1850, when it was detached from the commune of Ettelbruck, along with the commune of Erpeldange. The law forming Schieren was passed on 22 January 1850. Diekirch () is a canton in the north of Luxembourg. Neither the canton, town, nor commune of Diekirch should be confused with the former district of Diekirch, one of three administrative units in Luxembourg abolished in October 2015. Sauer
The Sauer ( German and Luxembourgish, , ) or Sûre ( French, ) is a river in Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. A left tributary of the Moselle, its total length is . Rising near Vaux-sur-Sûre in the Ardennes in southeastern Belgium, the Sauer flows eastwards and becomes the border with Luxembourg near Martelange. It forms the border between Belgium and Luxembourg for north of Martelange.
