Eternal Flame (climb)
__NOTOC__ The Trango Towers () are a family of rock towers situated in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, in the northern part of Pakistan. The Towers have some of the world's largest cliffs and offer some of the most challenging big wall climbing opportunities. Each year, climbers from around the world embark on expeditions to the Karakoram region to climb these granite faces. The Trango Towers are situated to the north of the Baltoro Glacier and are part of the Baltoro Muztagh, which is a sub-range of the Karakoram. The highest point within the group is the summit of ''Great Trango Tower'' at , the east face of which features the world's greatest nearly vertical drop. Structure of the group All of the Trango Towers lie on a ridge, running northwest to southeast, with Trango Glacier to the west and the Dunge Glacier to the east. Baltistan
Baltistan (); also known as Baltiyul or Little Tibet, is a mountainous region in the Pakistani-administered territory of Gilgit-Baltistan and constitutes a northern portion of the larger Kashmir region that has been the subject of a dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947. It is located near the Karakoram (south of K2) and borders Gilgit to the west, China's Xinjiang to the north, Indian-administered Ladakh to the southeast, and the Indian-administered Kashmir Valley to the southwest. The average altitude of the region is over . Baltistan is largely administered under the Baltistan Division. Prior to the partition of British India in 1947, Baltistan was part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, having been conquered by Gulab Singh's armies in 1840. John Middendorf
John William Middendorf IV (November 18, 1959 – June 21, 2024) was an American big wall climbing, big wall climber, mountaineering writer and designer of climbing equipment. In the 1980s, he climbed the hardest walls of Yosemite National Park, Yosemite, including El Capitan and Half Dome, and in 1992 he climbed the largest rock wall in the world, Trango Towers, Great Trango Tower. Also in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he pioneered numerous difficult big wall routes in Zion National Park. He was also a renowned portaledge designer and writer. Biography Middendorf began climbing after discovering the sport at summer camp when he was 14 years old. After finishing high school he travelled across the United States, before heading to Dartmouth College. Jeff Lowe (climber)
Jeff Lowe (September 13, 1950 - August 24, 2018) was an American alpinist from Ogden, Utah who was known for his visionary climbs and first ascents established in the Rocky Mountains, US and Canadian Rockies, Alps and Himalayas. He was a proponent of the Alpine style, where small teams travel fast with minimal gear. He is also credited as the inventor of mixed climbing. Lowe made over 1000 first ascents. Lowe was a co-founder of Lowe Alpine along with his brothers Greg Lowe (climber), Greg Lowe and Mike Lowe. Jeff Lowe is the cousin of George Henry Lowe , George Henry Lowe III. Lowe suffered from a neurological disease similar to ALS for approximately 18 years, until he died on August 24, 2018, in Colorado, United States. Catherine Destivelle (born 24 July 1960) is a French rock climbing, rock climber and Mountaineering, mountaineer who is considered one of the greatest and most important female climbers in the history of rock climbing, history of the sport. She came to prominence in the mid-1980s for sport climbing by winning the first major female climbing competitions, and by being the List of first ascents (sport climbing)#Redpointed by women, first female to redpoint (climbing), redpoint a sport climbing route with ''Fleur de Rocaille'' in 1985, and an route with ''Choucas'' in 1988. During this period, she was considered the strongest female sport climber in the world along with Lynn Hill, however, in 1990 she retired to focus on alpine climbing. Free Climbing
Free climbing is a form of rock climbing in which the climber can only use climbing equipment for climbing protection but not as an artificial aid to help them in ascending the route. Free climbing, therefore, cannot use any of the tools that are used in aid climbing to help overcome the obstacles encountered while ascending a route. The development of free climbing was a transformational moment in the history of rock climbing, including the concept and definition of what determined a first free ascent (or FFA) of a route by a climber. Kurt Albert (January 28, 1954 – September 28, 2010) was a German climber and photographer. He started climbing at the age of 14. Before he committed himself to a career of climbing in 1986, he was a mathematics and physics teacher. Climbing career At the age of seventeen, he climbed the Walker Spur in the Grandes Jorasses, and one year later he climbed the north face of the Eiger. After a visit to the Saxon Switzerland climbing area in Saxony, Germany in 1973 he recognized the potential of free climbing. He started to free climb in his home climbing area, the Frankenjura. In the routes, he would now try to ascend while free climbing, he would—in between attempts—paint a red 'X' on the rocks near pitons he did not need as holds or steps. Bojan Šrot (born 9 February 1960 in Celje, SR Slovenia, SFR Yugoslavia) is a Slovenian politician, judge, lawyer, and Mountaineering, mountaineer. He served for six terms as Mayor of the City Municipality of Celje. Early life, education, and mountain climbing Šrot was born in 1960 in Celje as the youngest of three sons. After primary school, he studied at First Grammar School, Celje, First Grammar School in Celje and then at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana, where he graduated in 1985. 2018 he married with Katarina Karlovšek During his studies, he was also actively involved in mountain climbing, noted as a top-status athlete in that sport.
