Estonia

Lehte Hainsalu
Lehte Hainsalu (married name Lehte Sööt; born 31 October 1938, Haaslava Parish, Tartu County) is an Estonian writer, poet and politician. In 1961 she graduated from Tartu State University, studied Estonian philology. After graduation, she worked at the newspaper ''Edasi'', at the Tartu Widget Factory ( et, Tartu Aparaaditehas), and at Eesti Televisioon studios in Tartu. From 1981 to 1990, she was the head of Tartu division of Estonian Writers' Union. Doris Kareva
Doris Kareva (28 November 1958) is an Estonian poet and translator. She serves as the head of the Estonian National Commission in UNESCO. Biography Kareva was born in Tallinn. Her father, Hillar Kareva, was a notable composer. She studied English language and literature at the University of Tartu and started to write poetry in the 1960s. She is a recipient of a number of state awards, including two Estonian State Cultural Awards and the Order of the White Star. Kareva's poetry was translated to 18 languages as of 2014. She translated to Estonian, among other authors, William Shakespeare, Anna Akhmatova, Emily Dickinson, Joseph Brodsky, Kahlil Gibran, Kabir, W. H. Auden, and Samuel Beckett. Maarja Kangro
Maarja Kangro (born 20 December 1973 in Tallinn) is an Estonian poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, nonfiction writer and librettist. Life She is the daughter of composer Raimo Kangro and author Leelo Tungal. She studied English at the University of Tartu and is currently a PhD student in cultural studies at the University of Tallinn. She has written several libretti for Estonian composers and has translated from Italian, English, German, and other languages (among others Giacomo Leopardi, Andrea Zanzotto, Valerio Magrelli, Giorgio Agamben, Hans Magnus Enzensberger). Kätlin Kaldmaa
Kätlin Kaldmaa (born August 30, 1970) is an Estonian freelance writer, poet, translator and literary critic. Since 2010, Kaldmaa is the president of the Estonian PEN. In 2016 she was elected Secretary of the PEN International. Early life and education Kätlin Kaldmaa was born August 30, 1970, and grew up in Voore, in Jõgeva County. She was the second child of four. Her parents were veterinary technicians. Books have had an important role in Kaldmaa’s life since childhood, when reading and writing them became her favourite pastime. At 18, she moved to Tartu, where she studied Estonian philology at Tartu University. Later, she graduated in English philology from Tallinn University. Maie Kalda
Maie Kalda (19 June 1929 – 8 November 2013) was an Estonian literary scholar and critic. Kalda was born in Väike-Maarja, the daughter of the writer Madde Kalda. In 1956 she graduated from Tartu State University in Estonian philology. Since 1956 she worked at Estonian SSR Academy of Sciences' Institute of Language and Literature, and its successor Under and Tuglas Literature Centre.
