Estonian Composers' Union
Estonian Composers' Union (abbreviation ECU; ) is an Estonian creative union which encompasses professional composers and musicologists in Estonia. The chairman of ECU is Märt-Matis Lill. Since 2005, ECU is a member of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM). As of 2021, ECU has 120 members. History The predecessor of ECU was ''Estonian Academical Society of Sound Artists'' which was founded on 19 November 1924. In 1940 the ECU predecessor was liquidated. During Soviet Estonia, similar organization was ''Association of Vocational Sound Artists'' which later was re-organized into ''Estonian SSR Composers' Union''. Musicology is the academic, research-based study of music, as opposed to musical composition or performance. Musicology research combines and intersects with many fields, including psychology, sociology, acoustics, neurology, natural sciences, formal sciences and Computational musicology, computer science. Märt-Matis Lill
Märt-Matis Lill (born 6 November 1975) is an Estonian composer. Märt-Matis Lill was born in Tartu, the son of writer, translator, cultural critic and philosopher Jaan Kaplinski and classical philologist and translator Anne Lill. Guitarist and violinist Emil Lansoo was his grandfather. He studied composition at the Tallinn Music High School under Lepo Sumera. In 1999 he graduated from Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He has been the artistic director of the Pärnu New Music Days Festival. International Society Of Contemporary Music
The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) is a music organization that promotes contemporary classical music. The organization was established in Salzburg in 1922 as Internationale Gesellschaft für Neue Musik (IGNM) following the Internationale Kammermusikaufführungen Salzburg, a festival of modern chamber music held as part of the Salzburg Festival. It was founded by the Austrian (later British) composer Egon Wellesz and the Cambridge academic Edward J Dent, who first met when Wellesz visited England in 1906. In 1936 the rival Permanent Council for the International Co-operation of Composers, set up under Richard Strauss, was accused of furthering Nazi Party cultural ambitions in opposition to the non-political ISCM.
