Nueva Gerona
Nueva Gerona () is a Cuban city, capital of the Isla de la Juventud special municipality and province. As of 2012, its population was 59,049. History The city was founded in 1830 by Francisco Dionisio Vives, who was the Spanish governor of Cuba at the time. There is an American graveyard in Nueva Gerona. Geography Nueva Gerona is located by the coast, in the north-eastern area of the island, between the hills of ''Caballos'' and ''Casas''. It is crossed by the river ''Río Las Casas'', which provides a navigable waterway to the Caribbean Sea. The city is divided into the ''repartos'' (quarters) of Centro, Abel Santamaría, Sierra Caballo, Nazareno, Saigón, Chacón and José Martí. Isla de la Juventud (; ) is the second-largest Cuban island (after Cuba's mainland) and the seventh-largest island in the West Indies (after mainland Cuba itself, Hispaniola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, and Andros Island). Piratas de Isla de la Juventud, or simply Piratas de la Isla is a baseball team in the Cuban National Series. Based in Nueva Gerona, Isla de la Juventud, the Piratas reached the Finals of the 54th Cuban National Series, remaining as runners-up. History In 1977, Isla de la Juventud (then called Isla de los Pinos) received the opportunity to have an independent baseball team. Before 1976, Isla de la Juventud was part of La Habana Province and therefore did not have a baseball club. From their inception in 1977 until the mid-1990s, Isla de la Juventud was a perennial cellar-dweller in the National Series. The Cuban National Series (, or SNB) is a domestic baseball competition in Cuba. Formed after the dissolution of the Cuban League in the wake of the Cuban Revolution, the National Series is a part of the Cuban baseball league system. For most of its existence, the National Series has existed as the top-level winter league in Cuba. From 2022 to 2024, it operated as a summer league, with the top six National Series teams qualifying for the Cuban Elite League (LEB). Starting with the 2025–26 season, SNB will return to a winter league schedule, while still qualifying teams to the LEB.
