Esquimalt-Colwood
Esquimalt-Colwood is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. Created under the 2021 British Columbia electoral redistribution, the riding was first contested in the 2024 British Columbia general election. It was created out of parts of Esquimalt-Metchosin and a part of Victoria-Beacon Hill. It has been held by Darlene Rotchford from the NDP since 2024. 2024 British Columbia General Election
The 2024 British Columbia general election was held on October 19, 2024, to elect 93 members (MLAs) of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Legislative Assembly to serve in the 43rd parliament of the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of British Columbia. The election was the first to be held since 2021 British Columbia electoral redistribution, a significant redistribution of electoral boundaries was finalised in 2023. The Legislative Assembly also expanded in size from 87 seats to 93 seats. Darlene Rotchford
Darlene Rotchford is a Canadian politician who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in the 2024 general election. She represents the electoral district of Esquimalt-Colwood as a member of the British Columbia New Democratic Party. She is a former municipal councillor in Esquimalt, a mental health and addictions worker, and a labour leader. She resigned from her councillor position after her election to the provincial legislature. In May 2025, a private member's bill put forward by Rotchford prohibiting MLAs from simultaneously holding municipal offices such as councilors and school board trusteeships was passed with support from both the NDP and the Green Party of British Columbia. 2021 British Columbia Electoral Redistribution
An electoral redistribution in British Columbia was undertaken by the BC Electoral Boundaries Commission in 2021. On October 21, 2021, the Government of British Columbia appointed Justice Nitya Iyer, Linda Tynan and Chief Electoral Officer Anton Boegman to serve as the 2021 commissioners. Justice Iyer was appointed the chair. The commission is required to complete redistricting every two election cycles. The final number of provincial electoral districts, and thus seats in the next legislature, will not be known until redistricting has occurred. The commission is required to complete its preliminary report by October 21, 2022, and its final report six months later. In May 2021, the government introduced legislation that removed a requirement that no reduction in seats could be considered for certain rural regions. Esquimalt-Metchosin
Esquimalt-Metchosin is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. It existed with this name from 1991 to 2009, and again from 2017 to 2024. In the gap, the overlapping electoral district was called Esquimalt-Royal Roads. The " Royal Roads" in the district's name references the maritime passage that connects the Harbour to the sea and is the namesake of Royal Roads Military College. The riding was reconfigured and brought back in the 2015 electoral redistribution and was contested again in the 2017 election. The 2021 redistribution that took effect for the 2024 election significantly altered electoral boundaries in the western communities: Metchosin was transferred to the new district of Juan de Fuca-Malahat while the balance of the district's territory was joined to Victoria West to form Esquimalt-Colwood. Victoria West, Greater Victoria
Victoria West, commonly called Vic West, is a historic neighbourhood of the city of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, located just west of downtown across Victoria Harbour, bordering on the Township of Esquimalt. When the Hudson's Bay Company arrived in Victoria in 1842 to establish Fort Victoria, the neighbourhood now known as Victoria West was the site of a village of the Songhees, the aboriginal people of the Victoria area. Royal Roads
Royal Roads is a roadstead or anchorage located in Strait of Juan de Fuca near the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour in Greater Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Esquimalt Harbour is a natural harbour in Greater Victoria on the southern tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The entrance to Esquimalt Harbour is from the south off the Strait of Juan de Fuca through a narrow channel known as Royal Roads.
