Esplen is a neighborhood in the West End of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Esplen started out as a railroad camp, which housed workers building the various railroads which border Esplen. Esplen is bordered by the Ohio River to the northeast and southeast, Chartiers Creek, which feeds into the Ohio at Esplen, and McKees Rocks via bridge over the creek to the north, Windgap to the northwest, Chartiers City to the south and southwest, Sheraden to the south, and Elliott to the southeast. P&LE Railroad
The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (P≤ ), also known as the "Little Giant", was formed on May 11, 1875. Company headquarters were located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The line connected Pittsburgh in the east with Youngstown, Ohio, in the Hazelton (Youngstown, Ohio), Haselton neighborhood in the west and Connellsville, Pennsylvania, to the east. It did not reach Lake Erie (at Ashtabula, Ohio) until the formation of Conrail in 1976. The P&LE was known as the "Little Giant" since the tonnage that it moved was out of proportion to its route mileage. While it operated around one tenth of one percent of the nation's railroad miles, it hauled around one percent of its tonnage. Elliott is a small, hilly neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States' West End Region. Sheraden is a neighborhood that is located in the West End of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Nearby neighborhoods include Windgap, Chartiers City, Crafton Heights, Esplen, and Elliott. History This neighborhood was named for William Sheraden, a settler who gave land for the construction of a railroad depot in exchange for the naming rights. Sheraden's original homestead still stands at 2803 Bergman Street, easily distinguished by the two sycamore trees which grew together to form an arch, a legacy of Sheraden's horticulturalist grandson. McKees Rocks, also known as "The Rocks", is a borough in Allegheny County in Western Pennsylvania, United States, along the south bank of the Ohio River. Chartiers Creek is a tributary of the Ohio River in Western Pennsylvania in the United States.
