Esperantic Studies Foundation
The Esperantic Studies Foundation, abbreviated ESF is a non-profit organisation initiated in 1968 by Jonathan Pool, E. James Lieberman and Humphrey Tonkin, with the aim to further the understanding and practice of linguistic justice in a multicultural world, with a special focus on the study of interlinguistics and the role of Esperanto. Under the banner "For linguistic justice in a multicultural world," ESF supports education and research programs that promote linguistic justice and equality. ESF aims to create environments in which languages are treated as equal and communication occurs in a non-discriminatory manner and to develop and support excellence in scholarship, education and interlingual communication. Its priorities and values are shaped through engagement with the worldwide community of Esperanto speakers, as well as with researchers, educators and activists in many language-related fields. Jonathan Pool
Jonathan Pool, born 1942 in Chicago, is a political scientist from the United States. He works on the political and economic consequences of linguistic circumstances and language policy. Pool studied political science in Harvard University, Harvard between 1960 and 1964. He then joined the Peace Corps and went to Turkey, where he taught English language, English. After his return he studied in University of Chicago, Chicago, where he graduated in 1968 and earned his PhD in 1971. Pool worked at the universities of Chicago, State University of New York at Stony Brook, New York (Stony Brook), University of Washington, Washington (Seattle), Stanford University, Stanford as well as in University of Mannheim, Mannheim, University of Paderborn, Paderborn, and Bielefeld University, Bielefeld in Germany. Esperanto ( or ) is the world's most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. Created by the Warsaw-based ophthalmologist L. L. Zamenhof in 1887, it was intended to be a universal second language for international communication, or "the international language" (). Esperantology
Esperantology, or Esperanto studies, is a special Esperanto linguistics whose subjects are word construction, word assembly, word introduction and transcription of umbrella terms and proper names. Esperantology principles of word construction are exemplary of the principles of necessity and sufficiency which postulate a balance between conciseness and clarity of the word. ''lernu!'' is a multilingual, web-based free project for promoting and teaching Esperanto. The name ''Lernu'' comes from the imperative form of the Esperanto verb ''lerni'', meaning "to learn". The site is run by E@I, an international youth organization, which started as a working group of the World Esperanto Youth Organization. The site's content includes various tools for learning Esperanto, such as exercises, games, dictionaries, grammatical overviews, an examination system and a multimedia library with books, music, voice-narrated stories and videos. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated in English as CEFR or CEF or CEFRL, is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and, increasingly, in other countries. The CEFR is also intended to make it easier for educational institutions and employers to evaluate the language qualifications of candidates for education admission or employment.
