Escondido Village Mall
Escondido Village at Valley and Ash in Escondido, California, now a suburb of San Diego, was the first enclosed, and first fully air-conditioned shopping mall in California, opening on March 9, 1964, costing $10 million to build. It was advertised as a shopping center with an "enclosed sidewalk" or "an air-conditioned sidewalk and mall", as the term "mall" was not yet synonymous with an enclosed shopping center, but rather its original meaning of a long, planted or green space. Walker Scott, the San Diego-based department store chain was an anchor, as was Mayfair Markets, TG&Y discount stores joining later. At launch, the center was long on a single-axis mall, had of gross leasable area, 40 stores, and of parking for 1,250 cars. Escondido is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. Located in the North County region, it was incorporated in 1888, and is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County. It has a population of 151,038 as of the 2020 census. Etymology "Escondido" is a Spanish word meaning "hidden". One source says the name originally referred to ''agua escondida'' or hidden water; another says it meant "hidden treasure". The city is known as ''Eskondiid'' in Kumeyaay. Shopping Mall
A shopping mall (or simply mall) is a North American term for a large indoor shopping center, usually anchored by department stores. The term "mall" originally meant a pedestrian promenade with shops along it (that is, the term was used to refer to the walkway itself which was merely bordered by such shops), but in the late 1960s, it began to be used as a generic term for the large enclosed shopping centers that were becoming commonplace at the time. In the U.K., such complexes are considered shopping centres (Commonwealth English: shopping centre), though "shopping center" covers many more sizes and types of centers than the North American "mall". Walker Scott
Walker Scott, also Walker-Scott or Walker's, was a chain of department stores in San Diego and surrounding area from 1935 to 1986 and had eight branches at the time of its closure. It was founded by Ralf Marc (or R.M.) Walker and George A. Scott. History Trained under Arthur Letts at Los Angeles' Broadway department store, Ralf Marc Walker was the co-founder/co-worker owner of the 125,000-square-foot department store known as the Fifth Street Store at Fifth and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, established in 1905. Mayfair Markets
Gelson's is a regional supermarket chain operating in Southern California. It operates service-oriented stores mostly in upscale neighborhoods. The Mayfair Connection actually began years before Gelson's did. Estimates put the genesis of the chain sometime around the stock market crash of 1929. In 1948, Arden Farms Company owned both Mayfair Markets and 48 California Van Markets. Arden created a new chain of stores: a new "Mayfair Markets", from the two existing chains. In the mid-1960s, the chain had extended to neighboring states: Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Washington state, and Nevada, with more than 250 stores in total. TG&Y
TG&Y was a five and dime, or chain of variety stores and larger discount stores in the United States. At its peak, there were more than 900 stores in 29 states. Starting out during the Great Depression in rural areas and eventually moving into cities, TG&Y stores were firmly embedded in southern culture as modern-day general stores with a bit of everything. Federal Employees' Distributing Company, known as Fedco, was a membership department store chain that operated in Southern California from 1948 to 1999. History Beginning The chain was unusual in that it was a nonprofit consumers' cooperative. It was founded by 800 U.S. Post Office employees who wanted to leverage their buying power by purchasing goods directly from wholesalers, and eliminate the additional markup of a retail store. The Board of Directors, headed by Robert Kee, established the first store on Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles. Members would come into the store and find items they wished to purchase in various catalogs. As demand grew, the Board of Directors began to carry merchandise in the store.
