Escambia High School
Escambia High School is a high school located in Escambia County, Florida, United States. There was controversy over its rebel mascot and playing of "Dixie." History Escambia High School (EHS) opened for the 1958–59 school year, and its first graduating class in 1959 was composed of 207 students. A large number of the first EHS students came from Pensacola High School. It was opened as an all-white segregated school with a school song of ''Dixie'' and a ''Rebel'' mascot. In 1969 the federal government forced the integration of the school. In 1976, years of racial animosity led to riots (more details below). In 2018, the school censored the yearbook, purging a section on school history to remove all mention of racism in the schools past. Preston Lee Hanna (September 10, 1954 – November 20, 2023) was an American Major League Baseball pitcher. He played all or parts of eight seasons in the major leagues from 1975 until 1982. William Edward Butler (August 12, 1950 – January 23, 2018) was an American professional football running back who played three seasons with the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Kansas State and was selected by the Saints in the fifth round of the 1972 NFL draft. Jacob Darnell Copeland (born July 20, 1999) is an American professional football wide receiver. He played college football for Florida and Maryland. Early life Copeland was raised in Pensacola, Florida, by his mother, Betty Copeland.
