Erstfeld Railway Station
Erstfeld railway station () is a railway station in the Swiss canton of Uri and municipality of Erstfeld. The station is situated on the original line of the Gotthard railway, at the foot of the ramp up to the Gotthard Tunnel. The original line, and the newer line through the Gotthard Base Tunnel meet at a junction some north of, and downhill from, Erstfield station. Most trains on the Gotthard route now use the base tunnel and therefore do not pass through the station. A motive power depot at Erstfeld station houses rolling stock needed for the Gotthard route, and especially for banking service. Erstfeld
Erstfeld is a municipality in the canton of Uri in Switzerland. History In 1962 a collection of four gold torques and three gold arm rings were discovered near Erstfeld. While the exact origin date is unknown, they are likely from the 4th century BC. The nearly pure gold rings were discovered under of land slide debris. The rings show Celtic motifs and designs and display a high level of skill. While their purpose is unknown, one theory is that they were offerings made to celebrate safely crossing the Alps. Erstfeld is first mentioned in 1258 as ''Ourzcvelt''. In 1638, it was listed under the Latin name ''in Protocampis''. In 1831, it was known as ''Hirschfelden''. Geography Erstfeld has an area, , of . Zug Stadtbahn
The Zug Stadtbahn () is an S-Bahn-style commuter rail network centred on Zug, Switzerland. Opened on 12 December 2004, the network forms part of the Central Switzerland S-Bahn project (), which also includes the Lucerne S-Bahn (). InterRegio
The InterRegio, often shortened to IR, is a train categories in Europe, train category for mainly domestic train services in use in some European countries, with Swiss Federal Railways operating the most dense network. InterRegio trains are semi-fast long-distance trains with more stops and usually lower prices than more upscale long-distance trains such as the InterCity (IC). Denmark The InterRegio system was also introduced to the Danish railways in the early 1990s and became an alternative to the InterCity services, with no seat reservation required. An island platform (also center platform (American English) or centre platform (British English)) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are sometimes used between the opposite-direction tracks on twin-track route stations as they are cheaper and occupy less area than other arrangements. A side platform (also known as a marginal platform or a single-face platform) is a platform positioned to the side of one or more railway tracks or guideways at a railway station, tram stop, or transitway. A station having dual side platforms, one for each direction of travel, is the basic design used for double-track railway lines (as opposed to, for instance, the island platform where a single platform lies between the tracks). Side platforms may result in a wider overall footprint for the station compared with an island platform, where a single width of platform can be shared by riders using either track. Crocodile (German ''Krokodil'') electric locomotives are so called because they have long "noses" at each end, reminiscent of the snout of a crocodile (see also Steeplecab). These contain the motors and drive axles, and are connected by an Articulated vehicle, articulated center section. The center section usually contains the crew compartments, pantograph (transport), pantographs and transformer. A motive power depot (MPD) or locomotive depot, or traction maintenance depot (TMD), is where locomotives are usually housed, repaired and maintained. They were originally known as "running sheds", "engine sheds" or just "sheds". Gotthard Tunnel
The Gotthard Tunnel (, ) is a railway tunnel that forms the summit of the Gotthard Railway in Switzerland. It connects Göschenen with Airolo and was the first tunnel through the Saint-Gotthard Massif in order to bypass the St Gotthard Pass. It was built as single bore tunnel accommodating a standard gauge double-track railway throughout. When opened in 1882, the Gotthard Tunnel was the longest tunnel in the world.
