Ernst Pepping
Ernst Pepping (12 September 1901 – 1 February 1981) was a German composer of classical music and academic teacher. He is regarded as an important composer of Protestant sacred music in the 20th century. Pepping taught at the and the . His music includes works for instruments (three symphonies), the church (the motet , the ), and collections including the (Spandau choir book) and the three volume (Great Organ Book), which provides pieces for the entire liturgical year. From 1922 to 1926 he studied composition at the Berliner Hochschule für Musik with , a pupil of Franz Schreker. Pepping composed mostly instrumental music until 1928. In music theory, the term mode or ''modus'' is used in a number of distinct senses, depending on context. Its most common use may be described as a type of musical scale coupled with a set of characteristic melodic and harmonic behaviors. It is applied to major and minor keys as well as the seven diatonic modes (including the former as Ionian and Aeolian) which are defined by their starting note or tonic. The Friedhof Heerstraße cemetery is located at Trakehnerallee 1 (''Trakehner avenue No.1''), district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in Berlin, Germany, to the east of the Olympic Stadium (Berlin), Olympiastadion. It covers an area of 149,650 square meters. The cemetery was originally named and planned for the local residents of Villenkolonie Heerstraße. It was laid out between 1921 and 1924 around the Sausuhlensee (''Sow's wallow lake''), so called after wallows the wild boars used there. Created by landscape architect Erwin Barth as a forest cemetery, the chapel was designed by Erich Blunck. Today's cemetery does not reflect its original design. The Nazi regime in Germany actively promoted and censored forms of art between 1933 and 1945. Upon becoming dictator in 1933, Adolf Hitler gave his personal artistic preference the force of law to a degree rarely known before. The ''Gottbegnadeten-Liste'' ("God-gifted list" or "Important Artist Exempt List") was a 36-page list of artists considered crucial to National Socialist culture. The list was assembled in September 1944 by Joseph Goebbels, the head of the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, and Germany's supreme leader Adolf Hitler. Erhard Egidi (23 April 1929 – 8 September 2014) was a German cantor, organist and composer of sacred music. He was ''Kantor'' at the Neustädter Kirche, Hannover, from 1972 to 1991, where he focused on music in church services, but also conducted concerts, with a preference for works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his own teacher Ernst Pepping. He was appointed Kirchenmusikdirektor (church music director), responsible for the church music of Hanover.
