Ernst Jandl Prize
The Ernst Jandl Prize is a literary award established by the Austrian Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport in memory of the poet Ernst Jandl. The international poetry prize for German-speaking writers is awarded every two years and presented during the Poetry Days in Neuberg an der Mürz. The award is endowed with 15,000 euros. Ernst Jandl
Ernst Jandl (; 1 August 1925 – 9 June 2000) was an Austrian writer, poet, and translator. He became known for his experimental lyric, mainly sound poems (''Sprechgedichte'') in the tradition of concrete and visual poetic forms. Poetry Influenced by Dada he started to write experimental poetry, first published in the journal ''Neue Wege'' ("New Ways") in 1952. He was the life partner of Friederike Mayröcker. In 1973 he co-founded the Grazer Autorenversammlung in Graz, became its vice president in 1975 and was its president from 1983 to 1987. His poems are characterized by German language word play, often at the level of single characters or phonemes. For example, his famous univocalic poem " ottos mops" (in English, "otto's pug") uses only the vowel "o". Of course, poems like this cannot easily be translated into other languages. Neuberg An Der Mürz
Neuberg an der Mürz is a municipality in the district of Bruck-Mürzzuschlag in the Austrian state of Styria. Geography Neuberg lies in the upper valley of the Mürz at the foot of the Schneealpe northwest of Mürzzuschlag. History Otto, Duke of Austria founded Neuberg Abbey in 1327. The Treaty of Neuberg was signed there in 1379. The abbey was the center of settlement in the Mürz Valley. The abbey was suppressed in 1786 by Emperor Joseph II, and its church became the parish church of Neuberg. The ''Salzburger Nachrichten'' is a German-language daily newspaper published in Salzburg, Austria. It has been in circulation since 1945. History and profile ''Salzburger Nachrichten'' was established in 1945 by the American forces occupying Austria following World War II. The first issue appeared on 25 October that year. Thomas Kling
Thomas Kling (June 5, 1957 – April 1, 2005) was a German poet. Life Thomas Kling was born in Bingen am Rhein, grew up in Hilden and went to school in Düsseldorf. He studied philology in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Vienna and lived in Finland for a certain period. Since 1983 he presented his poems on public performances – first in Vienna, than in the Rhineland. Later he performed together with the jazz percussionist . Kling lived with his wife Ute Langanky, a painter, on the museum area of Hombroich (a former rocket station) near Neuss. In 2005 he died in Dormagen of lung cancer. He was buried in Neuss-Holzheim. Poetry Thomas Kling was an important poet in contemporary German literature. Elke Erb (18 February 1938 – 22 January 2024) was a German author-poet based in Berlin. She also worked as a literary editor and translator. Biography Family provenance and early years Elke Erb was born at Scherbach (today part of Rheinbach) in the hills south of Bonn. Her parents had moved there with her uncle Otto and his family in 1937 in order, as her father put it, to "overwinter National Socialism". Ewald Erb (1903–1978), her father, worked at the local tax office, having lost his academic post as a Marxist literary historian at the University of Bonn in 1933 on account of "Communist activities". Monika Rinck
Monika Rinck (born 29 April 1969) is a German writer. Life and work After graduating from high school, Monika Rinck studied religious studies, history, and comparative literature in Bochum, Berlin and Yale. She writes poetry, prose and essays, which she published in various publishing houses and numerous anthologies (including Der Große Conrady) and literary magazines (including BELLA triste, Edit, Poetenladen), and works as a translator.
