Ernst Finger
Ernst Anton Franz Finger (name also spelled Ernest; 8 July 1856 – 17 April 1939) was an Austrian dermatologist born in Prague. He was a leading authority regarding venereal disease. In 1878 he obtained his medical doctorate at the University of Vienna, and later was an assistant to Hermann Edler von Zeissl (1817–1884) and Isidor Neumann (1832–1906) at the Vienna clinic of skin diseases and syphilis. Beginning in 1883 he worked as a privat-docent of dermatology, becoming an associate professor in 1894. From 1904 to 1927 he served in Vienna as director of the second department of dermatology and sexually transmitted diseases. He was the author of the highly regarded ''Die Blennorrhoe der Sexualorgane und ihre Complicationen'' (Blennorrhea of the sexual organs and associated complications), a book that was published in several editions, and also ''Die Vererbung der Syphilis'', a book that was an edition of Jean Alfred Fournier's work on congenital syphilis. Congenital Syphilis
Congenital syphilis is syphilis that occurs when a mother with untreated syphilis passes the infection to her baby during pregnancy or at childbirth, birth. It may present in the fetus, infant, or later. Clinical features vary and differ between early onset, that is presentation before 2-years of age, and late onset, presentation after age 2-years. Infection in the fetus, unborn baby may present as intrauterine growth restriction, poor growth, hydrops fetalis, non-immune hydrops leading to premature birth or perinatal mortality, loss of the baby, or asymptomatic, no signs. Jean Alfred Fournier
Jean Alfred Fournier (; 21 May 1832 – 23 December 1914) was a French dermatologist who specialized in the study of venereal disease. Biography As a young man Fournier served as an intern at the Hôpital du Midi as an understudy to Philippe Ricord (1800–1889). In 1863 he became ''médecine des hôpitaux'', and from 1867 worked with Augustin Grisolle (1811–1869) at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris. In 1876 he was appointed ''chef de service'' at the Hôpital Saint-Louis, later becoming a member of the ''Académie de Médecine'' (1880). His main contribution to medical science was the study of congenital syphilis, of which he provided a description of in 1883. In his numerous publications he stressed the importance of syphilis being the cause of degenerative diseases. In addition, in 1901 he founded an organization devoted to spreading knowledge to combat syphilis, called the ''Société Française de Prophylaxie Sanitaire et Morale''.
