Ernie Toseland
Ernie Toseland (17 March 1905 – 19 October 1987) was an English footballer who played in the outside right position. He has been described as 'a flying winger – football's Jesse Owens'. p38 Early life Toseland was born in Northampton in 1905. Be began his career as a footballer playing for Higham Ferrers Town and in 1927 joined Coventry City for £50 after playing against their reserve team. In his first reserve game he broke his collarbone and did not play for a year. He scored on his first team debut at Watford and his sensational speed and dribbling quickly made him a fan's favourite. The First Division scouts were soon alerted to his prowess and after just 22 games for Coventry (and 11 goals) he was signed by Manchester City for a club record £3000. Contemporary reports describe him as Coventry City's most gifted player of the decade. William Ralph "Dixie" Dean (22 January 1907 – 1 March 1980) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward. Dean holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season in top-flight English football, with 60. Clifford Sydney Bastin (14 March 1912 – 4 December 1991) was an English footballer who played as a winger for Exeter City and Arsenal. He also played for the England national team. Bastin is Arsenal's third-highest goalscorer of all time. Club career Exeter City Born in Exeter, Bastin started his career at Exeter City, making his début for the first team in 1928, at the age of 16. The match was on 14 April away against Coventry City. A week later Cliff Bastin scored two goals in Exeter's 5–1 home victory over Newport County, and was named man of the match. Despite only playing 17 games and scoring 6 goals in his time at Exeter, he was spotted by Arsenal manager Herbert Chapman in a match against Watford.
