Erkki Ryömä
Erkki Paavo Ryömä (20 February 1907 – 4 January 1997) was a Finnish farmer and politician, born in Karkku. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1955 to 1958 and again from 1962 to 1966, representing the Agrarian League, which changed its name to Centre Party in 1965. He was a presidential elector in the 1956, 1962 and 1968 presidential elections. Mauri Ryömä
Mauri Ryömä (30 October 1911, Helsinki – 28 November 1958) was a Finland, Finnish physician and politician. Biography He was a member of the Parliament of Finland, representing the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) from 1936 to 1937 and the Finnish People's Democratic League (SKDL) from 1945 until his death in 1958. He was imprisoned for political reasons from 1940 to 1944. After he was freed in 1944 as a result of the Moscow Armistice of 19 September 1944, he joined the SKDL and the Communist Party of Finland (SKP). He was the son of Hannes Ryömä and he was married to Elvi Sinervo. He died in a car accident four months after having been reelected in the 1958 Finnish parliamentary election. Karkku
Karkku is a former municipality in the Pirkanmaa region of Finland. It was consolidated in 1973 with Vammala, which in turn, was consolidated with Äetsä and Mouhijärvi into a town of Sastamala in 2009. Karkku is located by the lake Rautavesi, about 13 kilometres north of the Sastamala town center. The village of Karkku is listed as a Cultural environment of national significance by the Finnish National Board of Antiquities. History The village of Karkku was the center of the Medieval Sastamala socken (not to be confused with the modern town of Sastamala), which was one of the 10 original sockens of the historical province of Satakunta. 1968 Finnish Presidential Election
Two-stage presidential elections were held in Finland in 1968. On 15 and 16 January the public elected presidential electors to an electoral college.Dieter Nohlen & Philip Stöver (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p. 606 They in turn elected the President. The result was a victory for Urho Kekkonen, who won on the first ballot. The turnout for the popular vote was 70%. Kekkonen's two opponents, the centre-right National Coalition Party's candidate Director of the National Commercial Bank Matti Virkkunen and the populist Finnish Rural Party's leader Veikko Vennamo, criticized him for governing Finland in a too autocratic way. Vennamo in particular accused Kekkonen of pursuing a too dependent and servile foreign policy towards the Soviet Union.
