Eritrean Americans
Eritrean Americans are an ethnic group (or hyphenated ethnicity) of Americans who are of full or partial Demographics of Eritrea, Eritrean national origin, heritage and/or ancestry. History Eritrea regained its independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1991, after the Eritrean War of Independence. Since the inception of the war in the 1960s, many immigrants from Eritrea left for the United States. By 2000, the Eritrean community in the U.S. had grown to around 30,000 members. Eritrean Americans have since established ethnic enclaves in various places around the country, particularly in the Washington D.C. area. Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church
The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church () is one of the Oriental Orthodox Churches with its headquarters in Asmara, Eritrea. It was given autocephaly by Shenouda III of Alexandria, pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church, after Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia in 1993. Thus, the Eritrean Church accords a primacy of honor to the Coptic Church. Sources differ on the percentage of Christians in the Eritrean population, with most figures being close to one-half, although some sources report slightly more than 60%. Almost 90% of Eritrean Christians are followers of Oriental Orthodoxy. The rest of the population is almost entirely Muslim. Afar Language
Afar is an Afroasiatic language belonging to the Cushitic branch, primarily spoken by the Afar people, native to parts of Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia. It is an official language in Ethiopia; and a national language in Djibouti and Eritrea. Afar is officially written in the Latin script and has over 2.6 million speakers. Classification Afar is classified within the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic family. It is further categorized in the Lowland East Cushitic sub-group, along with Saho and Somali. Saho Language
The Saho language (Tigrinya language, Tigrinya: ) is an Afro-Asiatic languages, Afro-Asiatic language spoken in Eritrea and Ethiopia. It belongs to the family's Cushitic languages, Cushitic branch. Overview Saho is spoken natively by the Saho people. Traditionally, they inhabit the territory in Eritrea bounded by the bay of Erafayle (ዓራፋሊ) in the east, the Laacasi Gade (ላዐሲ ጋደ) valleys in the south, and the Eritrean highlands to the west (the Shimejana district on the eastern flank of the South- or Debub region in what was formerly known as Akele Guzai province). Nara Language
The Nara (Nera) or Barea (Barya) language is spoken by the Nara people in an area just to the north of Barentu in the Gash-Barka Region of western Eritrea. The language is often confused with Kunama, which is at best only distantly related. The endangerment status of Nara is unclear. Bilen Language
The Bilen language ( or ) is spoken by the Bilen people in and around the city of Keren in Eritrea. It is the only Agaw (Central Cushitic) language spoken in Eritrea. It is spoken by about 72,000 people. Spelling of the name "Blin" is the English spelling preferred by native speakers, but Bilin and Bilen are also commonly used. ''Bilin'' is the reference name arbitrarily used in the current initial English editions of ISO 639-3, but ''Blin'' is also listed as an equivalent name without preference. In the English list of ISO 639-2, ''Blin'' is listed in first position in both English and French lists, when ''Bilin'' is listed as an alternate name in the English list, and Bilen is the alternate name in the French list. Kunama Language
The Kunama language has been included in the proposed Nilo-Saharan languages, Nilo-Saharan language family, though it is distantly related to the other languages, if at all. Kunama is spoken by the Kunama people of the Gash-Barka Region in western Eritrea and just across the Ethiopian border. The language has several dialects including: Barka, Marda, Aimara, Odasa, Tika, Lakatakura, Sokodasa, Takazze-Setit and Tigray. Ilit language, Ilit and Bitama language, Bitama are not mutually intelligible and so may be considered distinct languages. There have been some use of the Kunama language in publications.
