Erika Davidson
Erika Davidson (July 19, 1926 – March 21, 2007) was an American photographer of German birth who specialized in photographing live theatre. Born in Frankfurt, she immigrated to the US, arriving June 28, 1951 on the SS America. Davidson began her career working for the Metropolitan Opera Guild's education department in the 1950s. She began contributing photos to ''Opera News ''Opera News'' is an American classical music magazine. It has been published since 1936 by the Metropolitan Opera Guild, a non-profit organization located at Lincoln Center which was founded to engender the appreciation of opera and also support ...'' magazine in 1965, becoming one of the magazine's most frequently published photographers for more than the next 25 years. SS America (1939)
SS ''America'' was an ocean liner and cruise ship American Built Passenger Liners, built in the United States in 1940, for the United States Lines and designed by the noted American naval architect William Francis Gibbs. It carried many names in the 54 years between its construction and its 1994 wreck: Steam Ship, SS ''America'' (carrying this name three different times during its career); troop transport USS ''West Point''; and SS ''Australis'', ''Italis'', ''Noga'', ''Alferdoss'', and ''American Star''. It served most notably in passenger service as ''America'' and the Greek-flagged ''Australis''. It was wrecked as the ''American Star'' at Playa de Garcey on Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands on 18 January 1994. The wreck deteriorated and completely collapsed into the sea. Metropolitan Opera Guild
The Metropolitan Opera Guild was established in 1935 to broaden the base of support for the Metropolitan Opera, promote greater interest in opera, and develop future audiences by reaching out to a wide public and serving as an educational resource that provides programs, publications, materials and services to schools, families, individuals, and community groups nationwide. The Guild was the brainchild of Eleanor Robson Belmont, a retired actress and the first female member of the board of directors of the Metropolitan Opera. She believed opera truly belongs to the people, and wished to provide them with more ways to connect to and enjoy the art form.
