Erie Township, Michigan
Erie Township is a civil township of Monroe County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,299 at the 2020 census. Sharing a southern border with the city of Toledo, Ohio, about southwest of the city of Detroit, the township is one of the southernmost areas included in the Detroit–Warren–Ann Arbor Combined Statistical Area (Metro Detroit). The township was organized in 1827 and is the southeasternmost municipality in the state of Michigan. The city of Luna Pier is mostly surrounded by the township, but the two are administered autonomously since Luna Pier incorporated as a city in 1963. Turtle Island (Lake Erie)
Turtle Island is a island in the western portion of Lake Erie in the United States. The island is divided between the U.S. states of Michigan and Ohio. Turtle Island is located about northeast of the mouth of the Maumee River in Maumee Bay. Today, the island houses several abandoned structures and the ruins of Turtle Island Light, a lighthouse dating back to 1866. Toledo War
The Toledo War (1835–1836), also known as the Michigan–Ohio War or Ohio–Michigan War, was a boundary dispute between the U.S. state of Ohio and the adjoining territory of Michigan over what is now known as the Toledo Strip. Gabriel Richard
Gabriel Richard ( ; October 15, 1767 – September 13, 1832) was a French Roman Catholic priest who ministered to the French Catholics in the parish of Sainte Anne de Détroit, as well as Protestants and Native Americans living in Southeast Michigan. Richard established schools, a library, and vocational training with weaving looms. After the Town of Detroit was nearly destroyed by a fire in 1805, he and others created a new layout for the town. His motto following the fire, ''Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus'' ("We hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes") is inscribed on the Seal of the City of Detroit. Richard helped negotiate the Treaty of Fort Meigs. He was co-founder of the ''Catholepistemiad'' (which would later be renamed the University of Michigan). Luna Pier is a city in Monroe County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,382 at the 2020 census. Previously known as Lakewood, it was established in the early 1900s and incorporated as a city in 1963. Its most prominent feature is a large crescent-shaped pier made of concrete, approximately long and reaching around out into Lake Erie.
