Eric Stokes (American Football Executive)
Eric Stokes (born December 18, 1973) is an American football scout and executive. He played college football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, winning two National championships prior to being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 1997 NFL draft. He played safety for them for two seasons and was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the 1999 expansion draft before suffering an injury and retiring. In 2000, Stokes rejoined the Seahawks as a scout and worked in other personnel roles with them for a decade. He held other executive roles with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, and Carolina Panthers throughout the 2010s. Safety (gridiron Football Position)
Safety (S), historically known as a safetyman, is a position in gridiron football on the American football positions#Defense, defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety (FS) and the strong safety (SS). Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field. 1999 NFL Expansion Draft
The Cleveland Browns had spent three years with its operations suspended after Art Modell had relocated the Browns' organization and players to Baltimore, Maryland to form the Baltimore Ravens at the end of the 1995 NFL season. Upon returning to the league, in order to become competitive with existing teams, the Browns were awarded the first pick in the 1999 NFL draft, and the league gave the Browns the opportunity to select current players from the other teams. That selection was provided by the 1999 National Football League expansion draft, held on February 9, 1999. 150 players were left unprotected by their teams for the Browns to draft.
