Eric Chipper
Eric Chipper (1915–1996) was an all-star and Grey Cup champion Canadian football player, playing from 1938 to 1950. Starting with the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1938, Chipper played halfback and (when George Fraser retired) was a league leading kicker. He won the Grey Cup in 1940. During the war years he played in the Ontario Rugby Football Union, with the Ottawa Combines in 1943 and the Ottawa Trojans in 1944. In 1945 he was selected as an all-star and in 1948 he won the Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy as the best player in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union, on the strength of his 37 points (1 touchdown, 3 field goals, and 23 converts.) Halfback (Canadian Football)
The halfback in Canadian football, and most commonly the Canadian Football League, currently refers to the defensive back rather than the running back, as in American football. The defensive halfback lines up inside covering the slotback. They are usually slightly larger than the cornerback to assist the linebackers in stopping the run. They can also be seen backing off the line early, to counter the forward motion of a slotback, which is allowed before the snap in Canadian football. The cause of the difference in naming between the two positions between the American and Canadian game, which otherwise uses the same names for positions, stems from the early history of the game. In both games, the early formations featured identical offensive and defensive formations, with seven down linemen and four players (five in Canada) in the backfield. In gridiron football, a lineman is a player who specializes in play at the line of scrimmage. The linemen of the team currently in possession of the ball are the offensive line (OL), while linemen on the opposing team are the defensive line (DL). Ottawa Rough Riders
The Ottawa Rough Riders were a Canadian Football League team based in Ottawa, Ontario, founded on September 19, 1876. Formerly one of the oldest and longest-lived professional sports teams in North America, the Rough Riders won the Grey Cup championship nine times. Their most dominant era was the 1960s and 1970s, in which they won five Grey Cups. The team's fortunes waned in the 1980s and 1990s, and they ultimately ceased operations following the 1996 CFL season, 1996 season. Five years later, a new CFL team known as the Ottawa Renegades was founded, though they suspended operations in 2006. Ottawa Combines
The Ottawa Trojans were a Canadian football team based in Ottawa, Ontario and competed in the Ontario Rugby Football Union from 1943 to 1947. The Grey Cup () is both the championship game of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the trophy awarded to the victorious team playing in the namesake championship of professional Canadian football. 28th Grey Cup
The 28th Grey Cup was played as a two-game series with the first game played on November 30, 1940, before 4,998 fans at Varsity Stadium in Toronto. The second game was played on December 7, 1940, with cold weather and snow contributing to a small attendance of 1,700 fans, at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa. This two-game series format was set up as a result of the Canadian Rugby Union disallowing the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the right to play in the title game due to a rule dispute. Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy
The Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy is a Canadian football award recognizing the most outstanding football player of the Quebec Student Sport Federation (RESQ) The trophy was originally donated to the Canadian Rugby Union in 1928 to honour former Montreal player Jeff Russel, who was killed in an accident in 1926 while repairing damaged electrical lines for the Montreal Power Company. The trophy was presented to the player who best exemplified skill, sportsmanship, and courage in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union. George Fraser (Canadian Football)
Gerorge Fraser (1911 – December 9, 1992) was a Canadian football player, playing from 1932 to 1945. Born in Perthshire, Scotland and coming to Canada in 1921, Fraser played all of his career with Ottawa-based teams. Starting with the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1932, he played guard and became a league leading kicker, was named an all-Canadian all-star in 1938, 1939 and 1940, and won the Grey Cup in 1940. He also played in the Grey Cup games of 1936, 1939 and 1941. In 1941 he scored 11 of Ottawa's 16 points. In 1942 he was playing coach with the Riders. During the war years he played in the Ontario Rugby Football Union, with the Ottawa Combines in 1943 and the Ottawa Trojans in 1944. The Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) was an early amateur Canadian football league comprising teams in the Canadian province of Ontario. The ORFU was founded on Saturday, January 6, 1883, and in 1903 it became the first major competition to adopt the Burnside rules, from which the modern Canadian football code would evolve. History W. Interprovincial Rugby Football Union
The East Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League, its counterpart being the West Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the East Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The four teams in the division are the Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, and Ottawa Redblacks.
