Eric Brotherton
Eric James Brotherton (born 7 May 1938) is a former South African cricketer and squash player. Brotherton made his first-class debut in 1959–60, opening the batting for Eastern Province with his captain Geoff Dakin and scoring 215 runs at an average of 23.88, with most of his innings exceeding 20 but with a top score of 33. In 1960–61, when Eastern Province had their best season in the Currie Cup, finishing second with four wins from six matches, Brotherton scored 336 runs at 30.54. He also played a match for South African Universities, hitting 164 not out, the record score for the Universities team, against Western Province, putting on 227 for the fourth wicket with Colin Bland. After a two-season gap he played for North Eastern Transvaal in 1963–64, leading the team's aggregates and averages with 308 runs at 30.80. He captained North Eastern Transvaal in 1964–65. Ventersburg
Ventersburg is a small town in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality of the Free State province in South Africa, 148 km north of Bloemfontein. History It was established on the farm Kromfontein which was owned by PA Venter who died in 1857. His son allowed a Reform Church to be established on the farm in 1864 and by 1871, the first plots of the original farm were sold. Ventersburg was declared on 6 May 1873. The Dutch Reform Church was built in Ventersburg in 1891 but it was burnt down in 1900 by the British forces during the Boer War. The church was later re-built in 1912. South African Universities Cricket Team
South African Universities are a former first-class cricket team in South Africa. They played 35 first-class friendly matches, usually one match per season, between March 1949 and January 1990. Matches South African Universities played their first first-class match in 1948–49 against the touring MCC, who won by an innings. Their next first-class match was also against the MCC, in 1956–57, and ended with the same result. David Pithey took 5 for 100 in the MCC innings. They won their next match, in 1957–58 against North Eastern Transvaal, when Colin Bland scored 131 on his first-class debut and Pithey and Peter van der Merwe shared most of the wickets. Later that season they drew their match against the Australians, Tony Pithey scoring 126 and his brother David taking 5 for 105. Colin Bland
Kenneth Colin Bland (5 April 1938 – 14 April 2018) was a Rhodesian cricketer who played in 21 Test matches for South Africa in the 1960s. He is regarded as one of the greatest fielders in the history of Test cricket. Cricket career Colin Bland was educated at Milton High School in Bulawayo. He made his first-class debut for Rhodesia as a schoolboy against Peter May's English team in 1956-57 and went on to represent them 55 times from 1956 to 1968.. He later played for the South African provincial sides Eastern Province and Orange Free State. A tall and elegant right-handed batsman, Bland broke into the South African Test team in 1961, and was a regular until 1966–67. Western Province Cricket Team
Western Province is the team representing Western Cape province in domestic first-class cricket in South Africa. The team began playing in January 1890 and its main venue has always been Newlands in Cape Town. Under the reorganisation of professional South African cricket in the 1990s and more recently, Western Province joined with Boland to form the side that now plays in the SuperSport Series under the name Cape Cobras and divides its time between Newlands and the Boland Park ground in Paarl. Western Province still competes under its provincial name in the UCB Provincial series. Currie Cup (cricket)
The CSA 4-Day Domestic Series is the domestic first class cricket competition of South Africa. The tournament is contested by teams from all nine provinces of South Africa. First contested as the Currie Cup from 1889–90, the tournament has undergone many changes and modifications in its history. In 2004, the traditional province based format was replaced, with many teams amalgamating. In its place six entirely professional franchises were created that represented much larger population areas. The competition underwent significant restructuring once again before the start of the 2021–22 season. The six team franchise system was disbanded and the tournament returned to its more traditional format. Orange Free State (province)
The Province of the Orange Free State ( af, Provinsie Oranje-Vrystaat), commonly referred to as the Orange Free State ( af, Oranje-Vrystaat), Free State ( af, Vrystaat) or by its abbreviation OFS, was one of the four provinces of South Africa from 1910 to 1994. After 27 April 1994 it was dissolved following the first non-racial election in South Africa. It is now called the Free State Province.
