Eric Borgstein
Eric S. Borgstein is a Dutch pediatric surgeon and professor of surgery at the University of Malawi College of Medicine. Early life Borgstein was born in Malawi to two Dutch physicians. He attended medical school and trained as a surgeon in Scotland and underwent specialized pediatric surgery training in the Netherlands. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Career He started work as a surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, in 1992. He has strong interest in surgical training and has played a leading role in the establishment of the Master of Medicine program in pediatric surgery at the Malawi University College of Medicine. He has also been a leader in the establishment of a pediatric surgery track at the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). Pediatric surgery is a medical specialty, subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. History Pediatric surgery arose in the middle of the 1879 century as the surgical care of birth defects required novel techniques and methods, and became more commonly based at children's hospitals. One of the sites of this innovation was the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Beginning in the 1940s under the surgical leadership of C. Everett Koop, newer techniques for endotracheal anesthesia of infants allowed surgical repair of previously untreatable birth defects. Raising Malawi is a charity non-profit organization that was founded by Madonna and Michael Berg in 2006. It is dedicated to helping with the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi's one million orphans, primarily through health and education programming. Initially, the "Raising Malawi Academy for Girls" was to be constructed but following an audit by the Global Philanthropy Group, which questioned expenditure on salaries and benefits as well as the management capacity and culture, the charity's school headmistress resigned in October 2010 and the project was scrapped. In January 2012, the organisation announced a partnership to build 10 primary schools to serve over 1,000 children in rural Malawi. The Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) is a public university in Malawi. It was created in 2019 by separating and then merging the College of Medicine and the Kamuzu College of Nursing from the University of Malawi. The Faculty of Medicine of KUHeS is the only medical school in Malawi. Location The university's main campus is located along Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, in Blantyre.
