Eric Binns (Public Administrator)
Eric Binns (13 August 1924 – 20 September 2007) was an English professional footballer who played as a defender. During his career he played for Halifax Town, Burnley and Blackburn Rovers in the Football League and also had spells in non-league football. Career Born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, Binns started his footballing career as an amateur with Huddersfield Town before joining his home-town club Halifax Town in May 1946. He scored one goal in six league matches for the club but was released at the end of the 1946–47 campaign. Binns subsequently moved into non-league football with Goole Town but returned to the professional game two years later after being offered a contract by Football League First Division side Burnley following a successful trial period. He spent the first three years of his Burnley career playing solely in the club's reserve team, unable to displace first-team centre-half Tommy Cummings from his position. Halifax, West Yorkshire
Halifax is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale, in West Yorkshire, England. It is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines. In the 15th century, the town became an economic hub of the old West Riding of Yorkshire, primarily in woollen manufacture with the large Piece Hall square later built for trading wool in the town centre. The town was a thriving mill town during the Industrial Revolution with the Dean Clough Mill buildings a surviving landmark. In 2021, it had a population of 88,109. It is also the administrative centre of the wider Calderdale Metropolitan Borough. Toponymy The town's name was recorded in about 1091 as ''Halyfax'', most likely from the Old English ''halh-gefeaxe'', meaning "area of coarse grass in the of land". Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was the top division of the Football League in England from 1888 until the end of the 1991–92 season, when its teams broke away to form the Premier League. From 1992 to 2004, the name First Division was given to what had previously been called the Second Division. After the 2003–04 season, the division was renamed the Football League Championship (now EFL Championship, with the division below it called EFL League One). Burnley Cricket Club
Burnley Cricket Club is a cricket club in the Lancashire League based at Turf Moor in Burnley, Lancashire. The club was a founder member of the Lancashire League in 1892 and has won the League Championship 19 times, the Worsley Cup 10 times and the 20/20 Cup 3 times. Jock Aird
John Rae Aird (18 December 1926 – 14 June 2021) was a footballer who played for both the Scotland and New Zealand national sides. Life and career Born in Glencraig, Fife, Aird started his professional career with Burnley, whom he joined from Perth junior side Jeanfield Swifts in 1948. A feisty but consistent left-back, he earned international recognition towards the end of his seven-season spell at Turf Moor, making his Scotland debut against Norway in May 1954, at the age of 28. He was then selected in the squad for the upcoming World Cup finals and was one of only 13 players who actually travelled to Switzerland, the SFA opting not to use the full complement of 22 permitted. He played in both matches at the finals as Scotland capitulated in the first round, losing to Austria (1–0) and Uruguay (7–0). Tommy Cummings
Thomas Smith Cummings (12 September 1928 – 12 July 2009) was an English football player and manager. Cummings was born in Sunderland, County Durham and started his football career at Hylton Colliery Juniors. Such was his quality as a centre-half he was invited to Strasbourg in 1947 to represent Great Britain in a junior international tournament. In the same year he signed a professional contract with Burnley, also opting to continue his apprenticeship as a mining engineer. He would also play for England B three times. Cummings made his league debut for Burnley in December 1948. He played in the 1959–60 championship winning season and in the 1962 FA Cup final, and in all made 479 appearances for the Clarets, standing fifth in their all-time list of Football League appearances with 434. Non-League football describes association football, football leagues played outside the top leagues of a country. Usually, it describes leagues which are not fully professional. The term is primarily used for football in England, where it is specifically used to describe all football played at levels below those of the Premier League (20 clubs) and the three divisions of the English Football League (EFL; 72 clubs). Currently, a non-League team would be any club playing in the National League (English football), National League or below that level.
