Equinox Initiative For Racial Justice
''Equinox'' is a European anti-racism organization, launched in March 2021 with the support of the European Commissioner Helena Dalli. Equinox was co-founded by Alfiaz Vaiya Claire Gilder and Sarah Chander. The Ireland-based human rights activist Bulelani Mfaco is also a member of Equinox. Representatives of Equinox denounced police violence in the EU towards racialised minorities. Equinox considered that the EU authorities did not sufficiently support civil society organizations combating racism. In March 2021 Equinox put forward a blueprint for reforms recommended to fight structural racism at the EU level. At the occasion of the 20-year anniversary of EU's Racial Equality Directive, Equinox criticized the legislation for being insufficient to address structural racism, as it is narrowly focused on individual acts of racism. Helena Dalli
Helena Dalli ( Abela; born 29 September 1962) is a Maltese politician who served as European Commissioner for Equality from 1 December 2019 to 30 November 2024. She is a member of the Labour Party. Career Before politics Before entering politics, Dalli worked as a model and actress. At 17, Dalli won Miss Malta, and represented the country at Miss World 1979. She subsequently appeared in the 1985 movie '' Final Justice'' as a policewoman who partners with the protagonist. After the failure of the film, she left acting and entered politics, working with Labour Party leader Dom Mintoff. Bulelani Mfaco
Bulelani Mfaco is a South African asylum seeker and activist in Ireland, and former spokesperson for the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland. In December 2024, the group announced that Mfaco had accepted and commenced with full-time employment elsewhere and he would not be serving as the group’s spokesperson. He had been in this role for 7 years voluntarily. Career While in South Africa, Mfaco was involved in protests calling for better housing, access to land with Abahlali baseMjondolo, healthcare and for improved policing. He was an active member of the Khayelitsha health forum and was branch secretary for the Democratic Alliance. Having applied for asylum in Ireland in 2017, Mfaco was placed in direct provision centres, first in Dublin, later in County Clare and County Limerick. European Green Deal
The European Green Deal, approved in 2020, is a set of policy initiatives by the European Commission with the overarching aim of making the European Union (EU) climate neutral in 2050. European Network Against Racism
The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) is an EU-wide network of anti-racist Non-governmental organization, NGOs. ENAR aims to end structural racism and discrimination and advocates for equality and solidarity for all Europeans. It connects local and national anti-racist NGOs throughout Europe and acts as an interface between its members and European institutions. It voices the concerns of ethnic and religious minorities in both European and national policy debates.
