Equestrian Events At The 2004 Summer Paralympics
Equestrian events at the 2004 Summer Paralympics at the Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre were competed in the dressage discipline only. There were four grades of rider disability: * Grade I - Mainly wheelchair users with poor trunk balance and or impairment of function in all four limbs, or no trunk balance and good upper limb function, or moderate trunk balance with severe impairment of all four limbs. * Grade II - Mainly wheelchair users, or those with severe locomotor impairment involving the trunk and with good to mild upper limb function, or severe unilateral impairment. * Grade III - Usually able to walk without support. Moderate unilateral impairment, or moderate impairment in four limbs, severe arm impairment. May need a wheelchair for longer distances or due to lack of stamina. Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre
The Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre hosted the Equestrian at the 2004 Summer Olympics, equestrian events at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The venue is located at Markopoulo Mesogaias, Markópoulo on the outskirts of the Athens suburbs. It was completed in December 2003 and officially opened on 12 August 2004, shortly before the beginning of the competition. The Seating capacity, capacity of the venue is 10,000 for the Jumping Event, 8,100 seats for the Dressage and 15,000 seats for the Cross-Country Event. In June 2007, Markopoulo Equestrian Centre held the three super special stages of the 54th Acropolis Rally. Equestrian events at the 2004 Summer Olympics featured three equestrianism, equestrian disciplines: dressage, eventing and show jumping, jumping. All three disciplines are further divided into individual and team contests for a total of six events. Sjerstin de Vries-Vermeulen ( Vermeulen, born ) is a Dutch former swimmer and equestrian, who competed at four Paralympic Games. She won five swimming medals at the 1988 Summer Paralympics, and won equestrian medals at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Paralympics in the mixed team dressage event. Anne Dunham (equestrian)
Anne Patricia Dunham (24 September 1948 – 11 May 2025) was a British Para-equestrian who competed in the Paralympic Games. Early life and disability Whilst at school Dunham worked at a local stable in her spare time and, by the age of 16, she was running a yard of 80 horses at weekends. She said that she "always wanted to compete" but whilst she was able to ride the horses in the stables their owners competed with them. Dunham was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 27 and used a wheelchair from the age of 30. At the age of forty, when her husband sold his business, she bought a horse and began to compete. Paralympic career Dunham first competed at the Paralympics competing on Doodlebug in dressage events at the 1996 Atlanta Games where she won a bronze medal in the individual mixed Kur trot grade II, and gold in the open team event. Karen Brain (born 26 April 1970) is a Canadian Paralympic equestrian. She won two medals in the 2004 Summer Paralympics. Early life Karen Brain was born in Victoria in 1970 to Darlene and Bill Brain. She began horseback riding with her sister at Oak Meadows Farm when she was 8 years old. By age 9, she was learning to jump. At 11 years old, Brain got her first horse, Patty, a 15.3 hh chestnut Thoroughbred. A year and a half later, Brain sold Patty and purchased Pumpkin, an American Quarter Horse. Brain continued to advance on Pumpkin, earning ribbons in various classes. In 1983, Brain met Alpine Renegade (Alpo), a 6 year old 15 hh gelding.
