Ephraim Apelis
Ephraim T. Apelis (26 December 1954 – 2003) from Warangansau village, in the Matalai Rural LLG of Namatanai District was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea representing the Namatanai Open Seat in New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea from 1997-2002. Ephraim Apelis was born on 26 December 1954. He obtained a B.Ed. degree from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG, 1973-1977), an M.Ed. from the University of Hawaii (1979-1981) and did post-graduate study at both Macquarie University, Australia (1983-1984) and UPNG (1987–88). Apelis was a secondary school teacher in 1977-1978 and a teaching fellow at UPNG from 1978-1981. He continued at UPNG as a lecturer and senior lecturer. He did research in the Education Research Unit of UPNG from 1981 until 1987 and continued with that department when it transferred to the National Research Institute in 1988. Matalai Rural LLG
Matalai Rural LLG was created from Wards 15–21 in the Namatanai Rural LLG and Wards 1-2 of Konoagil Rural LLG in the Namatanai district of New Ireland.Fanamaket (New Ireland) at Ethnologue (18th ed., 2015) It is located in the South East Coast of New Ireland Province. It has a population of 12,393 as of the 2011 PNG National Census. The current LLG President is Augustine Topi. Byron Chan
James Byron Chan (born 13 June 1969) is a Papua New Guinean politician and the son of the former Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan. People's Progress Party
The People's Progress Party is a political party in Papua New Guinea. It was founded on 11 November 1969 by Julius Chan and Warren Dutton, forming a caucus of eleven members of the House of Assembly of Papua and New Guinea. Following independence in 1975, Chan served, while party leader, as Prime Minister from 1980 to 1982 and 1994 to 1997. Chan’s second Government was brought down by the Sandline Affair and the party suffered in the elections that year. Chan and acting Prime Minister John Giheno lost their seats, and Michael Nali became the party’s leader in Parliament. When Chan was not serving as Prime Minister, the party was often a junior partner in a coalition with the Pangu Party. At the 2002 General Elections, the party won 8 seats, becoming the third largest party. At the 2007 General Election the party lost half of its seats.
