Ephra Garrett
Ephra Mary Garrett (20 September 1923 – 3 April 2008) was a New Zealand social work and women's studies academic. She was the first Māori woman to be appointed as faculty at Massey University. Garrett was awarded an honorary doctorate by Massey in 1993, and in the 1997 New Years Honours she was awarded a Queen's Service Medal. Early life and education Garrett was born in 1923 in Carterton, and affiliated to Te Atiawa and Ngati Mutunga. She grew up in a bicultural home in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand, and attended Waipawa High School (now Central Hawke's Bay College). Garrett trained as a teacher at Wellington Teacher's College and then taught in rural schools. She joined the Department of Māori Affairs in 1952, where she was the Māori Welfare Officer for Ikaroa District. Robyn Munford
Robyn Eileen Munford is a New Zealand social work researcher, and professor in the School of Social Work at Massey University. Her research concerns community development, young people's pathway to adulthood, and disability studies. Academic career Munford completed a Bachelor of Social Work at Massey University in 1978, and then Master of Social Work at the University of Calgary in 1983. Her 1989 PhD thesis at Massey University was titled'' The hidden costs of caring : women who care for people with intellectual disabilities.'' She joined the staff at Massey University in 1991, and rose to full professor. Munford is the co-editor of the journal ''Qualitative Social Work'', and is an adjunct professor in disability studies at York University. Ngāti Mutunga People
Iwi () are the largest social units in New Zealand Māori society. In Māori roughly means "people" or "nation", and is often translated as "tribe", or "a confederation of tribes". The word is both singular and plural in the Māori language, and is typically pluralised as such in English. groups trace their ancestry to the original Polynesian migrants who, according to tradition, arrived from Hawaiki. Some cluster into larger groupings that are based on (genealogical tradition) and known as (literally "canoes", with reference to the original migration voyages). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Massey University
Massey University ( mi, Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa) is a university based in Palmerston North, New Zealand, with significant campuses in Albany and Wellington. Massey University has approximately 30,883 students, 13,796 of whom are extramural or distance-learning students, making it New Zealand's second largest university when not counting international students.
