Eom Won-tae
Eom Bung-hun (born 1955), known by his pen name Eom Won-tae, is a South Korean poet. While fighting against chronic renal failure for 25 years, Eom continued to write poetry that delivers his warm introspection on life and death. His poetic world started from the gaze into his own existential pain and has steadily expanded into the affirmation of the other and insight into contemporary society. Life Eom was born in Daegu during the early summer of 1955. He made a literary debut in 1978, but did not engage in literary activities in earnest until 1990, when he, under the pen name of Eom Won-tae, published "Namuneun wae jugeoseodo sseureojiji anneunga" (나무는 왜 죽어서도 쓰러지지 않는가 How Come Trees Do Not Fall Even after Death?) and four other poems. Eom has been writing poetry while maintaining his main career as a professor of landscape architecture. Perhaps for this reason, his poems frequently feature natural objects. Seoul Shinmun
''Seoul Shinmun'' () is a Korean-language daily newspaper published in South Korea. The newspaper claims descendency from a newspaper established by Englishman Ernest Bethell in Korea on 29 June 1904 called '' The Korea Daily News'' (''Taehan maeil sinbo''); per this claim, ''Seoul Shinmun'' would be the oldest active newspaper in South Korea. It published in both English and Korean, and soon became significantly influential due to its ability to publish critically about the Japanese government, which was rapidly encroaching on Korean sovereignty at the time. However, mounting pressure caused it to be sold in 1910. It renamed to ''Maeil sinbo'', and largely published along Japanese colonial government lines. After the liberation of Korea, the newspaper was seized by the United States Army Military Government in Korea in November 1945 and reorganized as ''Seoul Shinmun''. Korean Poetry
Korean poetry is poetry performed or written in the Korean language or by Korean people. Traditional Korean poetry is often sung in performance. Until the 20th century, much of Korean poetry was written in Hanja. History The performance of oral songs in the religious life of the ancient Korean people is vividly recorded in Chinese dynastic histories. At state assemblies the chief ritualist would tell the story of the divine origin of the founder, as evinced by foundation myths, and his extraordinary deeds in war and peace. Recited narrative was interspersed with primal songs that not only welcomed, entertained, and sent off gods and spirits. Thus orality and performance were significant features of vernacular poetry in ancient Korea. A famous surviving example dates to 17 BC, Yuri's ''Song of the Yellow Bird'' (Hwangjoga, 황조가/黃鳥歌), written to lament the departure of his Chinese concubine Chihui.
