Enrique Chevalier
Enrique Chevalier Chardón (c. 1856 – 19 July 1931) was the Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1902. Background Chevalier Chardón was born in Ponce around 1856. His parents were Juan Felix Chevalier and Ramona A. Chardón. He married Antonia Valdivieso Ortiz with whom Chevalier Chardón had a daughter named Antonia. He died in Ponce on 19 July 1931. A member of the Partido Republicano Puertorriqueño, Chevalier had also been a member of the Ponce municipal assembly before becoming mayor. Mayoral term In 1902, the Puerto Rico Legislature approved a law that annexed the municipality of Guayanilla to the municipality of Ponce. As such, during his one year as mayor of Ponce, Mayor Chevalier was effectively the mayor of both Ponce and Guayanilla. The law was repealed in 1905. José De Guzmán Benítez
José de Guzmán Benítez (1857 – 28 October 1923) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 28 February 1901 until 1902. José de Guzmán Benítez is best known for his 1899 campaign initiative, presented to the people of Puerto Rico, asking for the creation of a pro-American political party. Early years Guzmán Benítez was born in 1857 to Manuel De Guzman and Modesta Benitez. He married Carmen Soto Rodriguez, from Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, with whom he had a son named Jose Ignacio (1884–1941). Mayoral term Guzmán Benítez, along with his chief of police Rodulfo Figueroa were regarded by the Federal Party (Puerto Rico), Federal Party as "highly controversial" figures due to their association with members of Ponce's lower class. Antonio Arias (mayor)
Antonio Arias Suñé (c. 1847 – 4 July 1913) was the mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico from 1903 to 1904. Biography Arias Suñé was born in Ponce around 1847. His parents were José María Arias Tellechea, from Venezuela, and Mercedes Suñé. He married Rosalía Ríos Ovalle, with whom he had seven children: Jose Maria, Rodulfo, Angel, Teodoro, Rosa Maria, Rafael, and Carlos Juan. Arias Suñé died on 4 July 1913. Mayoral term Due to a new law that had been passed in the Puerto Rico Legislature the previous year (1902), which annexed the municipality of Guayanilla to the municipality of Ponce, mayor Arias Suñé was, in effect, the mayor of Guayanilla as well, during his one-year term as mayor of Ponce. Once no longer mayor of Ponce, Arias returned to Guayanilla to oversee that municipality in the unofficial post as Guayanilla's mayor. ''La Democracia'', founded on 1 July 1890, was a news daily published by Luis Muñoz Rivera in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It crusaded for Puerto Rican self-government. At a publication length of 58 years, it was the longest continuously-running Puerto Rican Spanish newspaper of its time, and one of the longest continuously running Puerto Rican newspapers of all time. History La Democracia was for many years the official organ of the Liberal Party. It began in Ponce in 1890, as a newspaper with three issues per week, but in May, 1893, it became a daily. After ten years in Ponce, in 1900 it moved to Caguas. In 1904, it moved again, to San Juan. Originally not a daily, it became a daily when Muñoz Rivera imported a Marinori press from the United States. The Marinori press could produce 25,000 copies of a newspaper in one hour. Partido Republicano Puertorriqueño (English: Puerto Rican Republican Party) was a political party founded in Puerto Rico on July 4, 1899. The party dissolved in 1924 when it split into two factions, both factions forming alliances with other local parties. It was led by Dr. José Celso Barbosa. History The origin of the Partido Republicano Puertorriqueño can be traced to the aftermath of the Spanish–American War. Guayanilla (, ) is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located on the southern coast of the island, bordering the Caribbean Sea, south of Adjuntas, east of Yauco; and west of Peñuelas and about west of Ponce. Barrio Playa, also known as Playa de Ponce, Ponce Playa, or La Playa, is one of the thirty-one barrios that comprise the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico.
