Engineer Command (Italy)
The Engineer Command ( it, Comando Genio) in Rome-Cecchignola commands the specialized engineer regiments of the Italian Army and it is tasked with training of all officers and troops destined for engineer units, as well as with both doctrinal and operational tasks. The Engineer Command was established in 2010 and underwent a series of reorganizations, shifting from a Brigade-level command to a Division-level element. Nowadays, it keeps the traditions and the honours of the Arm of Engineers, and its commander is the Inspector of the Arm of the Engineers. 21st Engineer Regiment (Italy)
The 21st Engineer Regiment ( it, 21° Reggimento Genio Guastatori) is a military engineer regiment of the Italian Army based in Caserta in Campania. Today the regiment is the engineer unit of the Bersaglieri Brigade "Garibaldi". In 1937 the regiment was formed and assigned to the XXI Army Corps (Italy), XXI Army Corps, which was based in the Cyrenaica in eastern Italian Libya, Libya. During World War II the regiment formed engineer units for the Italian forces fighting in the Western Desert Campaign. After the Axis defeat in the Second Battle of El Alamein and the British conquest of Cyrenaica the regiment was declared lost. Reformed in 1953 as a battalion the unit was assigned in 1963 to the 3rd Missile Brigade "Aquileia", III Missile Brigade. The 5th Engineer Regiment ( it, 5° Reggimento Genio Guastatori) is a military engineer regiment of the Italian Army based in Macomer in Sardinia. Today the regiment is the engineer unit of the Mechanized Brigade "Sassari". History On 1 November 1895 the 5th Engineer Regiment (Miners) was formed in Rivoli with personnel from the 1st Engineer Regiment, 2nd Engineer Regiment, and 3rd Engineer Regiment. The regiment consisted of a staff, four brigades, a train company, and a depot. In 1896 the regiment moved to Turin. In 1910 the brigades were renamed battalions.
