Engels Teater
Engels teater ('Engel Theatre') was a historic theatre in Helsinki in Finland, active between 1827 and 1860. It was the second theater in Finland after ''Bonuviers Teater'' in Åbo, and the first theatre in Helsinki. It was located on Esplanaden at the intersection with Mikaelsgatan and was the predecessor of the Swedish Theatre. The theatre was built to house the travelling theatre companies performing in Helsinki, being either Swedish language companies touring Finland, or German language companies on their way to Saint Petersburg. The building was a small wooden house designed by Carl Ludvig Engel in the corner of the Esplanadi. The theatre building was used by travelling theater companies. Edvard Stjernström
Carl Edvard Stjernström (11 October 1816 – 10 February 1877) was a Swedish stage actor and theater director. In 1833, he was accepted as a student at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. From 1842 to 1850, he was employed at Nya Teatern. He was the director of the Stjernström theater Company from 1850 to 1854, director of the Mindre Teatern in Stockholm from 1854 to 1863, and the founder and manager of the Nya Teatern from 1875 to 1877. He played a significant role in 19th-century theatre in both Sweden, where his theater company was regarded to be one of the most prestigious, as well as in Finland, where his theater company was given theatre monopoly to perform from 1850 to 1853. Aleksis Kivi
Aleksis Kivi (; born Alexis Stenvall; 10 October 1834 – 31 December 1872) was a Finnish author who wrote the first significant novel in the Finnish language, '' Seitsemän veljestä'' ("Seven Brothers") in 1870. He is also known for his 1864 play '' Heath Cobblers''. Although Kivi was among the very earliest authors of prose and lyrics in Finnish, he is still considered one of the greatest. Bonuviers Teater
Bonuviers Teater ('Bonuvier Theatre') was a historic theatre in Åbo in Finland, active between 1813 and 1827. It was the first theater in Finland alongside the ''Engels Teater'' in Helsinki, and the first theatre in Åbo. It was the predecessor of the Åbo Svenska Theater. Charlotte Raa-Winterhjelm
Hedvig Charlotta Raa-Winterhjelm, née Forssman (20 November 1838 – 7 March 1907), was a Swedish actress active in Sweden, Norway and Finland. She played a pioneer role in Finland by introducing Finnish as a stage language, becoming the first actor in Finland to speak her lines in the Finnish tongue. Early career Charlotta Raa-Winterhjelm was born as the daughter of a goldsmith in Stockholm in Sweden under the name Charlotte Forssman. She studied at the Royal Dramatic Training Academy in Stockholm in 1854–56, after which she toured in travelling theater companies in Sweden and Finland. Maria Silfvan
Maria Elisabeth Silfvan, as married Lempke and then Westerlund, in Swedish called Maria Sylvan, (25 March 1802 in Turku – 10 September 1865 in Oulu), was a Finnish actor, among the first professional native actors in Finland. Life Maria Silfvan was born in Turku. In Finland, there was no permanent theatres and no native actors in the beginning of the 19th century; theatre was played by travelling Swedish theatre troupes touring the country. Between 1813 and 1827, the first theatre was managed in Turku by the troupe of K.G. Bonnevier, who was given permission by the Russian emperor, to build a simple theatre house in the city. Maria Silfvan was employed by Bonuvier in an unknown time, and was reportedly discovered when selling tickets and candy to the visitors of the theatre.
