Emory C. Swank
Emory Coblentz "Coby" Swank (January 29, 1922 – June 3, 2010) was the United States ambassador to Cambodia from 1970 to 1973. Personal life Swank was born in Frederick, MD and graduated magna cum laude from Franklin & Marshall College in 1942 where he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his master's degree in the English Language and Literature from Harvard University in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star in Europe. He married Margaret Katherine (Meg) Whiting in 1949. He is described as being 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, soft-spoken, and formal in dress. Lon Nol
Marshal Lon Nol ( km, លន់ នល់, also ; 13 November 1913 – 17 November 1985) was a Cambodian politician and general who served as Prime Minister of Cambodia twice (1966–67; 1969–71), as well as serving repeatedly as defence minister and provincial governor. As a nationalist and conservative, he led the military coup of 1970 against Prince Norodom Sihanouk, abolished the monarchy, and established the short-lived Khmer Republic. Constitutionally a semi-presidential republic, Cambodia was ''de facto'' governed under a military dictatorship. He was the commander-in-chief of the Khmer National Armed Forces during the Cambodian Civil War. On April 1st, 1975, 16 days before the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh, Lon Nol fled to the United States, first to Hawaii and Michigan and then to California, where he remained until his death in 1985. The United States had appointed its first envoy to Cambodia, Donald R. Heath, in 1950. Heath was a non-resident minister who was commissioned to Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, while resident in Saigon. Diplomatic relations between Cambodia and the United States were broken twice: The first time between 1965 and 1969, and the second time in 1975 just before the Pol Pot regime gained control of the country. John Gunther Dean
John Gunther Dean (February 24, 1926 – June 6, 2019) was an American diplomat. From 1974–1988, he served as the United States ambassador to five nations under four American presidents. Early years Dean was born as Gunther Dienstfertig in Breslau, Germany, into a Jewish family, the son of Lucy (Askenazy) and prominent lawyer Joseph Dienstfertig. As a child, he attended the exclusive Von Zawatzki Schule in Breslau. Escaping the rise of Nazism, the family left Germany in December 1938 and arrived in the United States in February. John's original first name was Gunther, however, the immigration officer changed to John Gunther to avoid it from sounding "too German". In March 1939 the family changed its name from "Dienstfertig" to "Dean" before the City Court of New York to better integrate into the crowd in Queens.
