Emily Margaret Cummins
Emily 'Margaret' Cummins, Royal Red Cross, R.R.C. (1866-1934) was a nursing leader and was matron of the Liverpool Royal Infirmary, from 1911 until 1924. In 1924 Cummins arranged what is thought to be the first annual nurses service in England to coincide with the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. Cummins was involved in the formation and development of professional nursing and the Royal College of Nursing, College of Nursing (Now RCN). Early life Cummins was born in Lewisham in 1866. She was the eldest child of two born to William John Lawrence Cummins, a Major in the army and engineer at Woolwich Garrison, Woolwich, and his wife Emily. Her mother was an innkeeper in 1891, and ran the Royal Oak public house in Milborne St Andrew, Milbourn St Andrew, near Blandford Forum, Blandford in Dorset. Lewisham ( ) is an area of southeast London, England, south of Charing Cross. It is the principal area of the London Borough of Lewisham, and was within the Historic counties of England, historic county of Kent until 1889. It is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London, with a large shopping centre and street market. Lewisham had a population of 60,573 in 2011. History The earliest written reference to Lewisham – – is from a charter from 862 which established the boundaries with neighbouring Bromley. Lewisham is sometimes said to have been founded, according to Bede, by a pagan Jutes, Jute, Leof, who settled (by burning his boat) near St Mary's Church (Ladywell) where the ground was drier, in the 6th century, but there seems to be no solid source for this speculation, and there is no such passage in Bede's history.
