The House of Sweden is a building in Washington, D.C., which hosts the Embassy of Sweden, the Embassy of Iceland, and the Embassy of Liechtenstein to the United States. The building is located at 2900 K Street N.W. in the Georgetown neighborhood. Apart from the embassies, the building, which is owned by the Swedish state through its National Property Board, also houses representatives of Swedish commerce. Facilities includes a secretariat, exhibition space, 19 corporate office suites, and a high-tech business event center. Building The building was designed by the Swedish architects Gert Wingårdh and Tomas Hansen, with VOA Associates in Washington, D.C., as architect of record. It has five floors and a total surface of . The front of the building is glass. Construction began in August 2004 and completed in the summer of 2006. Silvia Of Sweden
Silvia (born Silvia Renate Sommerlath; 23 December 1943) is Queen of Sweden as the wife of King Carl XVI Gustaf. She has held this title since her marriage to Carl XVI Gustaf in 1976. The king and queen have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Madeleine. Childhood and parentage Silvia Renate Sommerlath was born in Heidelberg, Germany, on 23 December 1943, the only daughter of Alice (née Soares de Toledo) and Walther Sommerlath. The relations between Sweden and the United States reach back to the days of the American Revolutionary War. The Kingdom of Sweden was the first country not formally engaged in the conflict (although around a hundred Swedish volunteers partook on the side of the Patriots) to recognize the United States before the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed subsequently in 1783 between Benjamin Franklin and Swedish representative Gustaf Philip Creutz. In the 19th century, relations were largely cordial. Liechtenstein–United States Relations
The United States and Liechtenstein executed their first treaty in 1926. Diplomatic relations were established in 1997. Since then, the relations between the two nations have been stable. Representatives of both countries in 2002 signed a mutual legal assistance treaty focused largely on jointly combating money laundering and other illegal banking activities. The United States does not have an diplomatic mission, embassy in Liechtenstein, but the United States Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, ambassador to Switzerland, located in Bern, is also accredited to Liechtenstein. The United States has maintained diplomatic relations with Iceland since the mid-1800s. Overview In 1868, the U.S. Department of State under William H. Seward authored a report that contemplated the purchase of Iceland from Denmark. The United States military established a presence in Iceland and around its waters after the Nazi occupation of Denmark (even before the U.S. entered World War II) in order to deny Nazi Germany access to its strategically important location (which would have been considered a threat to the Western Hemisphere). Kasper Salin Prize
The Kasper Salin Prize () is a prize awarded annually by Architects Sweden () to a Swedish building or building project "of high architectural quality". It is considered the most prestigious architectural prize in the country and has been awarded since 1962. The award is distributed to the building itself and consists of a bronze relief, designed by Swedish architect Bengt Lindroos (1918–2010), which is attached to the building. The prize was funded on the basis of a donation from Kasper Salin (1856–1919) who served as the city architect of Stockholm from 1898 until 1915. A satirical version of the award, Kasper Kalkon, was created by Architectural Uprising. The Ark are a Swedish glam rock band formed in 1991 and disbanded in 2011. They released five studio albums and became one of the most successful groups in Scandinavia. Nils Gunnar Wiggo Lund (born 26 July 1947) is a Swedish diplomat and politician. Early life Lund was born on 26 July 1947 in Karlskoga, Sweden, the son of Wiggo Lund, a lawyer, and his wife Brita (née Wahlqvist), a librarian. Lund did his military service as an interpreter in Uppsala and was educated in Russian. He graduated from Stockholm University and Uppsala University with a bachelor's degree in political economics, political science and Russian in 1971. Lund received a master's degree in political economics and international law from Columbia University in 1972.
