Emanuel Hoffmann
Emanuel Hoffmann (4 May 1896 – 3 October 1932) was a Swiss jurist and art collector and the son of Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche, a founder of the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche (also known as Roche) Biography He attended the humanist gymnasium in Basel, Switzerland, and studied law at the Universities of Basel and Bern. In 1921 he married Maja Stehlin. Since 1921 he worked at the families company Roche in Basel, between 1925 and 1930 he was in charge of the companies branch in Brussels, Belgium. In Belgium, he and his wife began to collect art from painters like Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee or Max Ernst. In 1930 he returned to Basel, where from 1932 onwards he was a vice-director at the headquarters of Roche in Basel. In 1932 he was elected the president of the Art Association of Basel. Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche
Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche, later Fritz Hoffmann-von der Mühll (1868 1920), was a Swiss businessman who founded the pharmaceutical company F. Hoffmann-LaRoche & Co. Early life Hoffmann was born in Basel, Switzerland (french: link=no, Bâle) on the 24 October 1868 as the third child of Friedrich Hoffmann and Anna Elisabeth Merian. His godfathers were the parental grandfather Johan Heinrich Merian von der Mühll, his uncle, the Mayor of Basel Carl Felix Burckhardt von der Mühll and Anna Von der Mühll. His family were wealthy businesspeople from Basel's social elite (called the " Daig"), and they provided both employment experience and investment at the beginning of his business career. In the 1870s and 80s he absolved primary and high school in Basel and then absolved an apprenticeship at a bank in francophone part of Switzerland. Max Ernst (2 April 1891 – 1 April 1976) was a German (naturalised American in 1948 and French in 1958) painter, sculptor, printmaker, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in Europe. He had no formal artistic training, but his experimental attitude toward the making of art resulted in his invention of frottage (surrealist technique), frottage—a technique that uses pencil rubbings of textured objects and relief surfaces to create images—and Grattage (art), grattage, an analogous technique in which paint is scraped across canvas to reveal the imprints of the objects placed beneath. Ernst is noted for his unconventional drawing methods as well as for creating novels and pamphlets using the method of collages.
