World Bowls Championship
The World Bowls Championship is the premier world bowls competition between national bowls organisations. World Outdoor Championships First held in Australia in 1966, the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women are held every four years. From 2008 the men's and women's events were held together. Qualifying national bowls organisations (usually countries) are represented by a team of five players, who play once as a single and a four, then again as a pair and a triple. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each of the four disciplines, and there is also a trophy for the best overall team — the Leonard Trophy for men and the Taylor Trophy for women. Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland compete as one combined Irish team. The 2020 event was postponed twice and scheduled for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 1977 Women's World Outdoor Bowls Championship was held Beach House Park, Worthing, Beach House Park in Worthing, England, from 21 May to 5 June 1977. Elsie Wilkie successfully defended her singles title which was held in a round robin format. The pairs went to Hong Kong, the triples to Wales and the fours to Australia. Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which players try to roll their ball (called a bowl) closest to a smaller ball (known as a "jack" or sometimes a "kitty"). Helen Wong (1925-2012) was a Hong Kong international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Wong won a gold medal in the 1977 World Outdoor Bowls Championship pairs in Worthing with Elvie Chok. Four years later she won a bronze medal in the singles and a silver medal in the team event (Taylor Trophy) at the 1981 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Toronto. In 1985 she won a third world medal when winning a silver medal in the triples at the 1985 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Melbourne with Sandra Zakoske and Rae O'Donnell. Philip Chok
Philip Chok is a former Hong Kong international lawn and indoor bowler. Career Chok won a gold medal in the fours at both the 1980 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Melbourne and the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. He also finished runner-up to the legendary David Bryant in the 1980 World Indoor Bowls Championship. Chok was one of the founders of the Hong Kong International Bowls Classic in which he won the 1983 & 1984 Hong Kong International Bowls Classic pairs titles.
