Elvenes, Finnmark
, , , or is a village in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. It is located at the mouth of the river Pasvikelva where it flows into the Bøkfjorden, a southern branch of the Varangerfjorden. The village lies about east of the village of Hesseng, along the European route E105. The town of Kirkenes lies about a drive to the northwest. History During the Occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany a camp for Soviet prisoners-of-war was located in Elvenes, and in 1942 about six hundred Norwegian teachers were sent to Elvenes for slave labour. Road bypass As part of an programme of improvements to European route E105, work started in 2014 on a bypass route to the north of the village comprising a long new Bøkfjord Bridge and a new tunnel through the adjacent Trifonhøgda mountain. Bjørn Elvenes (12 June 1944 – 19 August 1988) was a Norwegian ice hockey player, born in Oslo. He played for the Norwegian national ice hockey team, and participated at the Winter Olympics The Winter Olympic Games (), also known as the Winter Olympics, is a major international multi-sport event held once every four years for sports practiced on snow and ice. Hroar Elvenes (2 April 1932 – 4 December 2014) was a Norway, Norwegian former speed skater who competed in the 1952 Winter Olympics, in the 1956 Winter Olympics, in the 1960 Winter Olympics, and in the 1964 Winter Olympics. He was born in Hakadal and represented the club Oslo IL. In 1952 he finished sixth in the Speed skating at the 1952 Winter Olympics – Men's 500 metres, 500 metres competition. Four years later he finished 17th in the Speed skating at the 1956 Winter Olympics – Men's 500 metres, 500 metres event and 24th in the Speed skating at the 1956 Winter Olympics - Men's 1500 metres, 1500 metres contest.
