Elsie Suréna
Elsie Suréna (born June 9, 1956) is a Haitian writer and visual artist. Biography She was born in Port-au-Prince and grew up in southern Haiti. Suréna studied visual arts at the Ecole Nationale des Arts. She continued her studies in visual arts at the school of the Boca Raton Museum of Art and at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. She also studied Creative Writing, Education at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, and also at the Boston Center for Adult Education. She lived more than twenty years at Cap-Haïtien in the north before returning to the southern part of the island. Since 2010, she has been living in Canada. Suréna expresses herself through poetry, including haiku, photography, collage. She writes in Haitian Creole, French, English and Spanish. Her writing has appeared in various anthologies and publications, including '' Le Matin'' and '' Le Nouvelliste''. Haiti
Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti, is a country on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea, east of Cuba and Jamaica, and south of the Bahamas. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiku Poets
is a type of short form poetry that originated in Japan. Traditional Japanese haiku consist of three phrases composed of 17 morae (called '' on'' in Japanese) in a 5, 7, 5 pattern; that include a '' kireji'', or "cutting word"; and a ''kigo'', or seasonal reference. However, haiku by classical Japanese poets, such as Matsuo Bashō, also deviate from the 17-''on'' pattern and sometimes do not contain a ''kireji''. Similar poems that do not adhere to these rules are generally classified as ''senryū''. Haiku originated as an opening part of a larger Japanese genre of poetry called renga. These haiku written as an opening stanza were known as ''hokku'' and over time they began to be written as stand-alone poems.
