Elmore County is a County (United States), county located in the east central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 87,977. Its county seat is Wetumpka, Alabama, Wetumpka. Its name is in honor of General John Archer Elmore, John A. Elmore. Elmore County is part of the Montgomery, Alabama, Montgomery, AL Montgomery metropolitan area, Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Elmore County was established on February 15, 1866, from portions of Autauga, Coosa, Tallapoosa, and Montgomery counties. John Archer Elmore
John Archer Elmore (21 August 1762 – 24 April 1834) was an American military officer and politician. Born in Virginia to a Quaker father, Elmore nonetheless joined the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Biography Elmore was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia on 21 August 1762 to Archelaus Elmore and Susannah Morris. He joined the Continental Army while still a youth and served in the Virginia Line under Nathanael Greene. Elmore was with Green in his tour through the Carolinas, and was present at the Surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. After the war, he settled in Laurens District, South Carolina, where he was elected to the State Legislature. Elmore stood for election to the United States House of Representatives in 1810, but was soundly defeated by John C. Calhoun in what was Calhoun's first Congressional run. I-65 (AL)
Interstate 65 (I-65) meanders across of the Alabama countryside linking six of the state's 10 largest cities. The highway links together many important roadways that make commerce inside and outside of the state's boundaries possible. It starts at I-10 near Mobile. The western terminus of the highway is at an intersection with SR 229 near Lake Martin in northeastern Elmore County. State Route 14 (SR 14) is a major east-to-west state highway in the U.S. state of Alabama. Spanning , the highway begins at the Mississippi state line at the terminus of Mississippi Highway 69 (MS 69) and connects the cities of Selma and Prattville before ending at SR 147 on the western side of Auburn. History SR 14 was one of the original routes in the Alabama's first statewide highway system in the 1920s. The original routing followed much of the same path as today, but was significantly shorter.
