Elliott Castro
Elliott Castro Tirado (February 17, 1949 – July 23, 2017) was a Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico-born sports commentator, color commentator, sports historian and author. Castro was a commentator in major sports events in Puerto Rico as well as those related to Puerto Rican athletes such as the Olympics, the Pan American Games, and the Central American and Caribbean Games. Castro wrote several accounts of sports in Puerto Rico. One of them he co-authored with Carmen Lidin and is titled ''Listos!: Puerto Rico En El Deporte Internacional (1930–2004)'' (English: Ready!: Puerto Rico in International Sports (1930–2004)). On July 23, 2017, Elliott Castro Tirado died of a heart attack in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Santurce (, from the Basque '' Santurtzi'' which means Saint George) is a barrio or district in the municipality of San Juan. Its population in 2020 was 69,469. It is also the biggest and most populated of all the barrios in the capital city with a bigger population than most municipalities of Puerto Rico and one of the most densely populated areas of the island (13,257.4 persons per square mile). Puerto Rican Independence
Throughout the history of Puerto Rico, its inhabitants have initiated several movements to obtain independence for the island, first from the Spanish Empire from 1493 to 1898 and since then from the United States. A spectrum of pro- autonomy, pro-nationalism, and pro-independence sentiments and political parties exist on the island. Since the beginning of the 19th century, organizations advocating independence in Puerto Rico have attempted both peaceful political means as well as violent revolutionary actions to achieve its objectives. Since the second half of the 20th century, the independence movement has not been widely supported by the Puerto Rican public, failing to gain traction in both plebiscites and elections. In a status referendum in 2012, 5.5% voted for independence while Statehood obtained 61.1% of the votes cast. In sports broadcasting, a sports commentator (also known as sports announcer or sportscaster) provides a real-time commentary of a game or event, usually during a live broadcast, traditionally delivered in the historical present tense. Radio was the first medium for sports broadcasts, and radio commentators must describe all aspects of the action to listeners who cannot see it for themselves. Bayamón, Puerto Rico
Bayamón (, ) is a city, municipality of Puerto Rico and suburb of San Juan located in the northern coastal valley, north of Aguas Buenas and Comerío; south of Toa Baja and Cataño; west of Guaynabo; and east of Toa Alta and Naranjito. Bayamón is spread over 11 barrios and Bayamón Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area and the second most populous municipality in both the metropolitan area and Puerto Rico.
