Ellerslie Sires Produce Stakes
The Ellerslie Sires Produce Stakes, currently known as the Sistema Stakes, is a Group One horse race for Thoroughbred two-year-olds held at Ellerslie Racecourse. Run over 1200 metres on Champions Day in March, it is regarded as one of New Zealand's best two-year-old races along with the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes (1400 m) at Awapuni, Palmerston North. The race has also been called the Diamond Stakes or Auckland Diamond Stakes. Ellerslie Racecourse
Ellerslie Racecourse is the main racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand, for thoroughbred racehorses. It is an undulating, grass circuit in the suburb of Ellerslie, New Zealand, Ellerslie, with a circumference of just under 1,900 metres. Racing is conducted in a clockwise (right-handed) direction. History Horses have raced at Ellerslie since 1857 when Robert Graham hosted a race meeting on his property, on the site which is now Ellerslie Racecourse. The Auckland Racing club then purchased thirty-six hectares of land from Graham in 1872 on which the course is situated. The first race meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was held at Ellerslie on 25 May 1874. Fastnet Rock is an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse stallion. Sired by Danehill (horse), Danehill to dam Piccadilly Circus, he started his racing career in 2004. Though he did not win any races as a two-year-old, he ran third in the Group One AJC Sires Produce Stakes. He found great success after turning three years old. After being unplaced in the Caulfield Guineas, he proved himself as one of the top Australian sprinters by winning the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and Oakleigh Plate in February 2005. Paul David O'Sullivan (born 6 December 1959) is a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. O'Sullivan trained in partnership with his father, Dave O’Sullivan, for 17 years in New Zealand, and was the champion trainer in New Zealand on 11 occasions. He is the brother of New Zealand premiership-winning jockey Lance O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan moved to Hong Kong to train in 2004. Michael Moroney (horseman)
Michael Denis Moroney (6 June 1958 – 27 February 2025) was a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He was notable for having trained Brew to win the 2000 Melbourne Cup and many other Group One races in New Zealand and Australia. Life and career Moroney's mother was the daughter of Charlie and Ellie Casey, the breeders of 1960 Melbourne Cup winner Hi Jinx. Michael's father, Denny, was also involved in the racing industry and he continued to assist Michael. Black Minnaloushe (foaled 5 February 1998) is an American-bred Thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse and Horse breeding#Terminology, sire. Bred in Kentucky, he was sold as a yearling and sent to Ireland to race for the Irish-based Coolmore Stud organisation. After winning both his races as a juvenile, he was initially disappointing in early 2001 but showed marked improvement to win the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes. O'Reilly (24 August 1993 – 31 December 2014) was a New Zealand bred and trained thoroughbred racehorse who won two Group 1 races. O'Reilly was bred by Waikato Stud Holdings Limited. His dam, Courtza, was the winner of the 1989 Golden Slipper Stakes. He was named after the Irish international rugby player and businessman Tony O'Reilly. He was entered in the 1995 Karaka Yearling Sales but was unable to be sold when he failed a veterinary test, due to an abnormality in his larynx, so he was retained by his owner, Gary Chittick. Racing career O'Reilly was initially placed with Melbourne trainer, Gerald Ryan, but due to injuries was put out to paddock for eight months. Trevor John McKee (22 September 1937 – 5 April 2019) was a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He was best known as the trainer, in partnership with his son Stephen, of the champion racehorse Sunline. Biography McKee was born in the Thames Valley and started his racing career as a jockey. Sir Peter James Vela (born ) is a New Zealand businessman and Thoroughbred breeder and owner. With his brother Philip he founded Vela Fishing and Pencarrow Stud. He is most notably associated with the mare Ethereal, winner of the 2001 Melbourne Cup. Biography Vela was born in about 1949, the son of Filip Vela, who had come to New Zealand from the Croatian village of Pogdora in the 1920s. With his brother, Philip, Peter Vela founded a commercial fishing company in the 1970s. Vela Fishing grew to become one of the largest privately owned fishing companies in New Zealand. The company was the first to export New Zealand fillet products to the United Kingdom, and the first to export sea-frozen hoki fillets to the United States.
