Ellen Sinding
Ellen Sinding (; April 17, 1899 – April 18, 1980) was a Norwegians, Norwegian actress and dancer. Sinding was born in Haugesund, the daughter of the actor and sculptor Sæbjørn Buttedahl and the actress Clare Petrea Margrethe Benelli (1871–1933). She debuted as an actress in 1922 in the film ''Kjærlighet paa pinde''. During the 1920s, Sinding also appeared in the films ''Til sæters'' (1924), ''Den nye lensmannen'' (1926), and ''Fjeldeventyret'' and ''Syv dage for Elisabeth'' (both in 1927). In 1932 she appeared in ''Fantegutten'', in 1933 in ''Jeppe på bjerget (1933 film), Jeppe på bjerget'', and in 1936 in the short film ''Vi vil oss et land... (film), Vi vil oss et land...'', which was her last film role. Sinding was married to the film director and journalist Leif Sinding. As of December 2023, the municipality of Haugesund has a population of 37,855. The vast majority of the population (37,008) live in the Haugesund urban area in the municipality's southwest. ''Jeppe på bjerget'' (English: ''Jeppe on the Hill'' or ''Jeppe of the Hill'') is a Norwegian film from 1933 based on Ludvig Holberg's play '' Jeppe på bjerget.'' The film was directed by Per Aabel and Harry Ivarson. Per's father Hauk Aabel played the starring role as Jeppe; it has been extremely unusual in Norwegian cinema for a son to direct a film with his father in a leading role. The film was produced by Leif Sinding, the sets were designed by Egil Sætren, and Fritz Gebhardt was responsible for the sound recording. Plot Jeppe is a poor farmer who drinks too much. His wife, Nille, is strict and often beats him with a stick called "Master Erik." One day it is market day, and Nille tells Jeppe that he must buy two pounds of green soap. "Vi vil oss et land" (lit. 'We Want Ourselves a Country') is a famous phrase in the context of Norwegian nationalism, derived from a poem by Per Sivle. It has been evoked by many different groups, including during the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany, when an arrest order was issued on the deceased Sivle. Original use It is taken from a poem by Per Sivle (1857–1904) issued in 1895, ten years before Norway gained its independence. Sivle's poem, titled "Vi vil os et Land -", was published in the poetry collection '' Bersøglis- og andre Viser'' from 1895. It was originally written as the last verse of the occasional poem "Her spirer i Norge", written for a procession in support of universal male suffrage organized by Kristiania Liberal Party in 1894. ''Fantegutten'' (The Gypsy) is a Norwegian film from 1932 directed by Leif Sinding. Sinding also wrote the screenplay, which was based on Harald Meltzer's novel of the same name, published posthumously in 1873. Egil Sætren designed the sets. Plot The film opens in a valley on a spring day. A couple is buried in an avalanche, but their son Iver miraculously succeeds in escaping. He is found by the wealthy farmer Sjur Rognved, who lets the boy stay with him. Growing up, Ivar falls in love with the farmer's daughter Ragnhild, who returns his love. One day a group of Gypsies comes to the farm, and a woman in the group, Marja, recognizes Iver as her nephew. When the farmer learns this, he no longer wants Ragnhild to marry Iver because he does not consider "Gypsy blood" pure. Iver is furious about this and takes refuge with the travelers.
