Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April25, 1917June15, 1996) was an American singer, songwriter and composer, sometimes referred to as the "First Lady of Song", "Queen of Jazz", and "Lady Ella". She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, Intonation (music), intonation, absolute pitch, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. After a tumultuous adolescence, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Her rendition of the nursery rhyme "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" helped boost both her and Webb to national fame. After taking over the band when Webb died, Fitzgerald left it behind in 1942 to start her solo career. Her manager was Moe Gale, co-founder of the Savoy, until she turned the rest of her career over to Norman Granz, who founded Verve Records to produce new records by Fitzgerald. With Verve, she recorded ...

Just One Of Those Things (song)
"Just One of Those Things" is a popular song written by Cole Porter for the 1935 musical ''Jubilee''. Porter had written the score for ''Jubilee'' while on an extended sea cruise in the early part of 1935; however, in September 1935, ''Jubilees librettist Moss Hart mentioned that the play's second act required an additional song. Porter had "Just One of Those Things" completed by the following morning. (He had previously used the title for a song intended for but not featured in the 1930 musical ''The New Yorkers''. Apart from the title the two songs are distinct). Porter's original lyric lacked an adjective for the line "a trip to the moon on '' gossamer'' wings": "gossamer" would be suggested by his friend, Ed Tauch. A recording by Richard Himber reached the charts of the day in 1935 and Peggy Lee's stylized arrangement of the song was a No. 14 hit in the ''Billboard'' charts in 1952. Other recordings The song has become a standard of the American Songbook, with many other ...

Love For Sale (song)
"Love for Sale" is a song by Cole Porter introduced by Kathryn Crawford in the musical '' The New Yorkers,'' which opened on Broadway on December 8, 1930, and closed in May 1931 after 168 performances. The song is written from the viewpoint of a prostitute advertising "love for sale". Early versions The song's chorus, like many in the Great American Songbook, is written in the A-A-B-A format. However, instead of 32 bars, it has 64, plus an eight-bar tag. The tag is often dropped when the song is performed. The tune, like many of Porter's, shifts between a major and minor feeling. The A section is in the key of B-flat minor before modulating to B-flat major and back. Background When the song came out in 1930, a newspaper labelled it as "in bad taste";Schwartz, Charles (1979). ''Cole Porter''. Da Capo Press. , pp. 115–116 radio stations avoided broadcasting it. Because of the complaints, Porter shifted the setting of the song in the musical to the Cotton Club in Harlem, where ...

My Heart Belongs To Daddy
"My Heart Belongs to Daddy" is a song written by Cole Porter for the musical '' Leave It to Me!'' which premiered on November 9, 1938. It was originally performed by Mary Martin, who played Dolly Winslow, the young "protégée" of a rich newspaper publisher, her sugar daddy. In the musical, Dolly wears a fur coat while stranded at a Siberian railway station and surrounded by eager men. She performs a striptease and sings to them about how since she has her "daddy", she may still flirt with other men but won't "follow through". Later versions Martin sang it again in the 1940 movie '' Love Thy Neighbor''. Again she wears a fur coat, but the setting is a show within a show and the act is more conventional as she wears an evening gown beneath the fur. The words to the introduction are altered, the innuendoes being toned down. Her best-known movie performance is in the 1946 Cole Porter biopic '' Night and Day'' in which she plays herself. The film recreates Martin's audition then seg ...

"So Near and yet So Far" is a song written by Cole Porter, for the 1941 film ''You'll Never Get Rich'', where it was introduced by Fred Astaire, and accompanied a dance with Astaire and Rita Hayworth, choreographed by Robert Alton. Astaire and Hayworth's performance was significant as the only occasion where Astaire's female dancing partner led the choreography of the dance. Porter's biographer, William McBrien described the song as "beautiful and highly successful". Priscilla Peña Ovalle in her book ''Dance and the Hollywood Latina'' describes the song as a "latune", a "tune with a Latin beat and an English-language lyric" that was a "U.S. consumer-friendly approximation" of an Afro-Cuban rumba. Theorist Gustavo Perez Firmat discussed "So Near and yet So Far" in his book ''The Havana Habit'' and described it as "the most elegant rumba ever captured on film".
