Elkhead State Park
Elkhead Reservoir State Park is a Colorado state park located in Moffat and Routt counties in northwest Colorado, near Craig. The park surrounds and includes the 900 surface acre Elkhead Reservoir. It is referred to as Elkhead State Park. Elkhead Reservoir State Park is managed as a complex out of the Yampa River State Park office, located to the west of the town of Hayden, CO. Elkhead Reservoir was constructed in 1974 and is owned by the City of Craig. The Colorado State Parks system took over management of recreational use and facilities at the reservoir in 1998. The reservoir is stocked with primarily warmwater fish species, including largemouth bass, black crappie, and bluegill.Craig Chamber of CommerceElkhead Reservoir Activities at the park include both non-electric and electric camping, fishing, boating, wildlife viewing, and hiking. Moffat County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,292. The county seat is Craig. With an area of 4,751 square miles, it is the second-largest county by area in Colorado, behind Las Animas County. Craig, Colorado
Craig is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Moffat County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 9,060 at the 2020 United States census. Craig is the principal city of the Craig, CO Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Founded by William H. Tucker, Craig was incorporated as a city on July 15, 1908. The town was named for one of the town's financial backers, Reverend William Bayard Craig (1848-1916). Elkhead Mountains
The Elkhead Mountains are a mountain range in Colorado. The mountain range is considered to be low altitude within Colorado as all of the peaks are under . Located within Routt County, Colorado, Routt and Moffat County, Colorado, Moffat counties, the Elkhead Mountains are far from metropolitan areas and have few lakes and streams, so they attract relatively few visitors. The mountain range is of volcanic origin and all of the peaks were formed by volcanic action.
