Elizabeth Polly
Elizabeth Polly is traditionally the name of a beloved Matron, hospital matron at Fort Hays, Kansas, an "angel of mercy" during the cholera outbreak of 1867 who also died of the disease. Local legend has it that her ghost is still seen walking the area. Service and death In 1867, Fort Hays was established on a low slope south of Big Creek (Kansas), Big Creek, its role being to provide security for the Smoky Hill Trail. For the most part, the "fort" was still just a Military camp, bivouac of hundreds of tents in the late summer of 1867 when it became the center of a war with the Plains Indians, plains tribes over the construction of the Kansas Pacific Railway parallel to the trail. Rome, Ellis County, Kansas
Rome was a short-lived postbellum frontier settlement in Ellis County, Kansas, United States. It is notable for its association with the early plains career of its co-founder, William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Rome was the first town established within the future Ellis County, followed very shortly by rival Hays City. History In 1867, William Rose, a railroad contractor, and William Cody founded the townsite to take advantage of the recent relocation of Fort Hays adjacent to the planned crossing of Big Creek by the Kansas Pacific Railway. Fencepost limestone, Post Rock limestone, or Stone Post is a stone bed in the Great Plains notable for its historic use as fencing and construction material in north-central Kansas resulting in unique cultural expression. The source of this stone is the topmost layer of the Greenhorn Limestone formation. It is a regional marker bed as well as a valued construction material of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Kansas. Jesse Woodson James (September 5, 1847April 3, 1882) was an American outlaw, bank and train robber, guerrilla and leader of the James–Younger Gang. Fort Elliott was a United States Army post in the Texas Panhandle, operational between 1875 and 1890 and named for Major Joel H. Elliott, a casualty of the Battle of Washita River in 1868. The decision to establish Fort Elliott in what was to become Wheeler County, Texas, was made in December 1874 by Colonel Nelson A. Fort Supply is a town in Woodward County, Oklahoma, United States, northwest of the city of Woodward, the county seat. The population was 330 at the 2010 census. History The United States Army post of Fort Supply was established in 1868 as a "Camp of Supply" for the winter campaign that General Philip Sheridan led against the Southern Plains Indians. People established the town of Fitzgerald three miles west-southwest of the site of the former Fort Supply in 1902, but this town quickly failed. Rancher H. H.
