Elizabeth Cottrell
Elizabeth Stevenson (professionally Elizabeth Cottrell; born 1975) is a geologist and Curator, museum curator for the National Museum of Natural History. She is a fellow of both the Geochemical Society and the Mineralogical Society of America. Early life and education Born in 1975, Cottrell grew up in northern Vermont. Her father was an engineer. In 1997, Cottrell received a Bachelor of Science in geochemistry from Brown University. She went on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. in environmental science from Columbia University in 2004. Career Cottrell has been a visiting scientist to the Carnegie Institution for Science, Carnegie Institute, as well as a Fulbright Scholar. The focus area of Cottrell's research is largely in Alaska and Oceania, though she works out of Washington, D.C. Global Volcanism Program
The Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program (GVP) documents Earth's volcanoes and their eruptive history during the Quaternary Period of Earth's geologic history, with particular emphasis on volcanic activity during the Holocene Epoch (the last 11,700 years). Geochronology
Geochronology is the science of Chronological dating, determining the age of rock (geology), rocks, fossils, and sediments using signatures inherent in the rocks themselves. Absolute geochronology can be accomplished through radioactive isotopes, whereas relative geochronology is provided by tools such as paleomagnetism and stable isotope ratios. By combining multiple geochronological (and biostratigraphic) indicators the precision of the recovered age can be improved. Volcanism
Volcanism, vulcanism, volcanicity, or volcanic activity is the phenomenon where solids, liquids, gases, and their mixtures erupt to the surface of a solid-surface astronomical body such as a planet or a moon. It is caused by the presence of a heat source, usually internally generated, inside the body; the heat is generated by various processes, such as radioactive decay or tidal heating.
