Elizabeth Brown (astronomer)
Elizabeth Brown (6 August 1830 – 5 March 1899) was a British astronomer and Quaker who specialized in solar observation, especially sunspots and solar eclipses. She was instrumental in founding the British Astronomical Association and was also one of the first women Fellows of the Royal Meteorological Society. Life and career Elizabeth was born and lived in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Her father, Thomas Brown, introduced her to science, including observing sunspots and taking meteorological measurements, notably, of rainfall. She took over her father's meteorological observations from 1871 until his death aged 91 in 1883. After this release of domestic and filial duties, she began to travel the world to make observations of solar eclipses, publishing two anonymous accounts of her travels. Refractor
A refracting telescope (also called a refractor) is a type of optical telescope that uses a lens as its objective to form an image (also referred to a dioptric telescope). The refracting telescope design was originally used in spyglasses and astronomical telescopes but is also used for long-focus camera lenses. Although large refracting telescopes were very popular in the second half of the 19th century, for most research purposes, the refracting telescope has been superseded by the reflecting telescope, which allows larger apertures. A refractor's magnification is calculated by dividing the focal length of the objective lens by that of the eyepiece. Isis Pogson, (born Elizabeth Isis Pogson; 28 September 1852 – 14 May 1945), was a British astronomer and meteorologist who was one of the first women to be elected as a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Early life Elizabeth Isis Pogson was born in Oxford, England, on 28 September 1852, the eldest daughter of Norman Pogson by his first marriage to Elizabeth Jane Ambrose (died 1869). Pogson was one of the first women elected as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Elizabeth Isis was probably named after the River Isis, the part of the River Thames that flows through Oxford. Annie Maunder
Annie Scott Dill Maunder (; 14 April 1868 – 15 September 1947) was an Irish-British astronomer, who recorded the first evidence of the movement of the sunspot emergence from the poles toward the equator over the 11-year solar cycle, finding the now-called Maunder Minimum. As sole author, she also devised with her husband, Edward Walter Maunder, the butterfly diagram for sunspots. Alone, she discovered that the sunspots in the Sun were asymmetrical. She was one of the leading astronomers of her time, but because of her gender, her contribution was often underplayed at the time. In 1916, she was elected to the Royal Astronomical Society, 21 years after being refused membership because of her gender. Alice Everett
Alice Everett (15 May 1865 – 21 July 1949) was a British astronomer and engineer who grew up in Belfast. Everett is best known for being the first woman to be paid for astronomical work at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, when she began her employment at the observatory January 1890. In 1903 she was the first woman to have a paper published by the Physical Society of London. She also contributed to the fields of optics and early television.
