Elixir is a functional programming, functional, concurrent computing, concurrent, High-level programming language, high-level General-purpose programming language, general-purpose programming language that runs on the BEAM (Erlang virtual machine), BEAM virtual machine, which is also used to implement the Erlang (programming language), Erlang programming language. Elixir builds on top of Erlang and shares the same abstractions for building Distributed computing, distributed, fault-tolerant applications. Elixir also provides tooling and an extensible design. The latter is supported by compile-time metaprogramming with Macro (computer science), macros and polymorphism (computer science), polymorphism via protocols. The community organizes yearly events in the United States, Europe, and Japan, as well as minor local events and conferences. An elixir is a sweet liquid used for medical purposes, to be taken orally and intended to cure one's illness. When used as a pharmaceutical preparation, an elixir contains at least one active ingredient designed to be taken orally. Etymology The word was introduced in late Middle English, through Latin from the Arabic (), which in turn is the Arabization of the Ancient Greek () (from () ). For centuries, ''elixir'' primarily meant an ingredient used in alchemy, either referring to a liquid which purportedly converts lead to gold, or a substance or liquid which is believed to cure all ills and give eternal life.
