Elise Wiedermann
Elise Wiedermann (31 August 1851 – 24 July 1922) was a Viennese-born soprano who performed and taught singing in Melbourne, Australia from 1883. Early life and education Elise Wiedermann was born in Vienna, Austria on 31 August 1851 to Elise (née Aschinger) and Carl Wiedermann. She studied singing at the Vienna Conservatorium, where she was taught by Mathilde Marchesi and was awarded laureate in 1873. Career Wiedermann's first professional performances were with the Komische Oper and Carltheater in Vienna, the latter under the baton of Franz von Suppé. She subsequently performed in Zürich in 1875 and then at the Court Theatre Braunschweig for five years. She became engaged to Viennese-born Carl Pinschof in 1880. He migrated to Melbourne where she followed in 1883. The couple were married on 19 August 1883 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Hawthorn. George Marshall-Hall
George William Louis Marshall-Hall (28 March 1862 – 18 July 1915) was an English-born musician, composer, conductor, poet and controversialist who lived and worked in Australia from 1891 till his death in 1915. According to his birth certificate, his surname was 'Hall' and 'Marshall' was his fourth given name, which commemorated his physiologist grandfather, Marshall Hall (1790–1857). George's father, a barrister – who, however, never practised that profession – appears to have been the first to hyphenate the name and his sons followed suit. John Henry MacFarland
Sir John Henry MacFarland (19 April 1851 – 22 July 1935) was an Irish– Australian university chancellor. MacFarland was born in Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland and educated at the Royal Academical Institution, Belfast. He was senior scholar in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Queen's College, Belfast, where he was taught by John Purser. There he earned a BA in 1871 and MA in 1872. Moving to St. John's College, Cambridge, he was elected a foundation scholar, and earned a second BA, as 26th wrangler, in 1876. He also got an MA there in 1879. MacFarland taught at Repton School in Derbyshire from 1876 to 1880. (A decade later, his younger brother Robert (1860-1922), also a Queen's Belfast and Cambridge maths graduate, would teach at Repton.) Boroondara General Cemetery
Boroondara General Cemetery, often referred to as Kew cemetery, is one of the oldest cemeteries in Victoria, Australia, created in the tradition of the Victorian garden cemetery. The cemetery, located in Kew, a suburb of Melbourne, is listed as a heritage place on the Victorian Heritage Register. History The cemetery site was reserved in 1855 and trustees were first appointed in 1858. A site plan was drawn up by Frederick Acheson, a civil engineer in the Public Lands Office, with the layout segregated by religious denomination, a common occurrence at the time. Elsa Stralia, born Elsie Mary Fischer (1 March 1881 – 31 August 1945) was an Australian soprano with an international reputation in Europe and America. Family The daughter of Johannes Hugo Fischer (1850-1901), and Annie Christiana Fischer (1858-1898), née Claussen, Elsie Mary Fischer was born in Norwood, South Australia on 1 March 1881. The family moved to Melbourne in 1899, where she was convent-educated. She married William Mountford Moses (1875-1940) in Sydney on 24 December 1908. She divorced Moses in 1935. She married Adolph Theodor Christensen (1878-1942) of Patea, New Zealand in Sydney on 14 November 1935. They lived in Patea until Christensen's death in 1942. Evelyn Scotney (11 July 1896 – 5 August 1967) was an Australian lyric coloratura soprano of great renown in the period from 1913 to the late 1920s. Her range extended to E ''in altissimo''. She was compared very favourably with Amelita Galli-Curci, Luisa Tetrazzini and others. Florence Austral (26 April 1892 – 15 May 1968) was an Australian operatic soprano renowned for her interpretation of the most demanding Wagnerian female roles, although she never gained the opportunity to appear at the Bayreuth Festival or New York's Metropolitan Opera. It has been said of Austral that she was "considered to have few equals in sheer vocal quality until the arrival of Kirsten Flagstad. Acting was not her strong point; and her characterisations were mainly achieved with the voice, which made her recordings so vastly enjoyable."
